interview
Per Wilberg - (Opeth)
November 28, 2005
Opeth, one of the most talented bands ever known to Metal. I'll never forget the first time I heard Opeth about a decade ago, I was amazed to say the least, so this interview is a very special one to me. On their 3rd run through the U.S. in a year, newly appointed keyboardist, Per Wilberg, takes time out of the busy tour schedule to sit with me over a cup of coffee and speak about their new album, their upcoming performance on BBC and the future of Opeth.

Nightshade – In Essence Divided
March 8, 2026
When you really stop to think about it, Progressive music can be anything you want it to be, and this album was an example of how far the genre can be pushed. The part of me who has to categorize everything he hears for my own reference point and for a guide for listeners is frustrated that I can’t find the proper word to describe their music. However, the other part of me who knows good music when he hears it is completely satisfied.

Abstracted – Hiraeth
March 3, 2026
“Hiraeth” is beautiful, well balanced, but also with enough unsuspecting turns and breaks that every time you listen you can’t help but discover and/or hear something that you hadn’t noticed before. That to me makes a record a diamond in the rough, as you just don’t have a clue when the explorations will be complete.

Fox Paradox - Echoes Of The Hunt
February 26, 2026
When I picture a pizza, I envision a couple of different toppings and a nice, consistent dough. Hopefully, this LP is like a pizza: a couple of different toppings (genres), but a consistent underlying theme (dough). I'm very hungry, if you couldn't tell.

Kreator – Krushers Of The World
February 16, 2026
KREATOR deliver a signature album with a unique KREATOR sound. “Krushers Of The World” is a well-composed mixture of fast classical Thrash and melodic mid-tempo tracks, all embedded into a dark and at times melancholic melodic framework

Black Sea of Trees – Cult of the Sun
February 8, 2026
This was an excellent album, and as I mentioned above, it’s the level of restraint that the band shows that it its shining feature. Ambiance, atmosphere, mystery, and darkness appear in bounds, and they always have the element of surprise.

El Muerto - Lost and Amsterdamned

"Lost and Amsterdamend" is a resplendent, yet dark album, and I want to hear more of this project down the road.

Lychgate – Precipice
December 19, 2025
A precipice is the edge of a very steep cliff, and that’s what I felt the entire time...standing so close to death. This was a pleasantly strange, unsettling listening experience for me, and the closest feeling that I can think of to describing it might be either the liberation, or the horrible guilt, one feels when they have just taken the soul from a fellow human.

"A lot of metal musicians are just nerds who love reading." – Sam Graff, AGENBITE MISERY
October 23, 2025
AGENBITE MISERY hails from New Hampshire. In February 2026, the band will be releasing their debut album, "Remorse of Conscience." The album is an experimental metal interpretation of "Ulysses" by James Joyce. This month Gary Hernandez, writer and editor for Metal Temple, was able to catch up with Sam Graff (guitars, vocals, synth) to discuss the some deeper details about the band, their aspirations, and their upcoming album as well as the curious link between literature and metal.

Omnivide - Arise
October 18, 2025
There is no doubt in my mind; I really like what OMNIVIDE does on “Arise”. This certainly is Death Metal from start to finish, but the way they have been able io incorporate the Progressive Metal inspirations, rhythms, breaks and parts is nothing less than impressive.
review
Zombie Eater – Faces
October 7, 2025
This was a delightfully gooey album that had a thick, dark groove for months…even years. The riffs were covered in soot, and you come out soiled and defiled in the end, but the smile on your face will last a lifetime.

Erebe – Duolithe
June 29, 2025
When I imagine the future of Metal, sure, the classical styles will always be there. But this sound is what will occupy the fringes. It’s a kaleidoscopic journey through sound, where boundaries dissolve and styles bleed into one another with both chaos and purpose. “Doulithe” is an album for those who crave surprise, who find joy in dissonance and beauty in contradiction. It is a triumph of experimentation—a record that doesn’t ask for your understanding, only your surrender.

Rickert G. - Endless Thoughts
June 3, 2025
The songs on “Endless Thoughts” have body, soul and feelings galore, and the way that RICKERT G. has put his compositions together makes a whole lot of sense. It makes for almost 42 minutes of very divers and exciting Metal.

Múr – Múr
November 22, 2024
This is a very promising debut album, and they have almost reached the pinnacle already…but not quite. They do nearly everything right on the album except for varying the pacing of the songs. They set out with a boundless vision of where the music can take them, and don’t put any restraints on themselves, and that is a good starting point. But the crawling nature of the songs holds back the total advancement of the album. Still, this is a band to keep an eye on for sure.
review
Bedsore – Dreaming the Strife for Love
November 1, 2024
This was an unusual album in many ways. The only real ode to Death Metal is in the vocals, and some harder elements in the music. The sound was wide open for me, and they made some very strong steps forward into the varied and sometimes odd world of Progressive Metal. I also enjoyed their dark brand of music immensely. This is definitely a band to keep an eye on.
review
The Hypothesis – Evolve
October 29, 2024
One of the best parts of the album was how the band held some of the Progressive elements in check, and let the melody do much of the talking. There are still the hardened structures of Metal but they are tempered with hooks. I can’t say this enough…this album is all about a great balance.
review
Moss Upon The Skull – Quest for the Secret Fire
September 28, 2024
This was a pleasing album with an uncommon sound, something out of bounds but not too far. What impressed me most was the way that the band controlled an album which seemed so loose at times. This was indeed an outerworldly listening experience.
review
Trelldom – …By The Shadows …
August 28, 2024
The album is dark, a place where melodies twist and turn through corridors of haunting echoes and sudden, sharp dissonance, creating a wall of sound that is both crushing and exhilarating. Vocals emerge from the depths like tortured whispers, and rhythms pulse erratically, at times lulling you into a trance-like state. There’s a feeling that something is always lurking just out of sight, something that haunts the spaces between the sounds. It’s like being trapped in a fevered dream that teeters on the brink of nightmare, compelling you to keep listening, even as it pulls you deeper into its embrace.

Vredehammer – God Slayer
August 3, 2024
Consider the fact that this music was composed and performed by one person, and consider his unusual and intelligent approach to songwriting. Next, consider the way he flawlessly combines several genres of Metal. Last, consider that all of this is wrapped up into a sound that can blast through you windows at break-neck speed and leave your home smoldering from the flames, and that is exactly what makes it such a vital album.

Octoploid – Beyond the Aeons
July 25, 2024
Once again, the Fins prove their paramount songwriting ability. This sound is unique, and carries with it elements of old School Prog with modern Death Metal. The combine these two things flawlessly, into a sound that reminds me of some of the best music of yesteryear but it retains a modern edge, with plenty of listenability.
review
White Stones – Memoria Viva
June 26, 2024
There is no doubt that this is a unique album, even in considering the annals of Progressive music. Some critics might even argue that it suffers from a lack of cohesion, but I think the diversity of the album is its greatest strength.
review
The Eternal – Skinwalker
June 25, 2024
There are definitely elements of the aforementioned bands in their sound, but what they have crafted here is deeply personal and all their own. The songs carry a heavy emotional impact and burden to the listener, but also make you yearn for more punishment.
