ALTARED STATES was actually formed in 1989, only to be disbanded in 1990. The made their return in 2019, and have been around ever since. On “Borrowed Time” they give us the time to embrace 5 songs.

I have to say that IMPERIAL DOMAIN has that undefinable trait which makes you like what they do. What is remarkable is that it doesn’t matter if what the band is good or not.

As far as “Evocations” goes i believe that this band is at tis best when they let their Metal hearts speak, with or without Symphonic and/or Epic elements.

Just because I showed up fashionably late to the XIII DOORS party (album dropped February 2025) doesn’t mean the lights are off and the keg is empty. Oh contra ire, this party is just warming up. So grab a drink, snag an appetizer and squeeze into the mosh pit as we drop the needle on “Into The Unknown”.

This was an excellent album, and the way that composer Ian weaved the themes mentioned above into reach song was expertly done. He made the story come to life in your head, with constant images as the album moved. Like the great sea, the tale undulated, rising and swelling with the tide, and in the end, you have to ask yourself…can I live a life of isolation, or will it slowly drive me mad?

The One Who Propels

They pour so much feeling into the music. Sometimes, it’s that pain you feel throughout your body that paralyzes you, while other times it’s like a rock in the pit of your stomach that supplies a dull ache that is always there, no matter what you do. The muted production matches the feeling of grey you have on the album as well.

This was an excellent album. Black Metal is such an expansive genre these days, so why wouldn’t bands take advantage of ever widening boundaries? ASHBRINGER do on “Subglacial” for sure. There are wonderful surprises around evert corner. My only real complaint about the album is the production. Although you can sometimes hear a muted or an overly treble production in the genre, neither often do the sound justice.

This is an album where Blackgaze breathes and burns. The genre has always lived in contradiction, but what truly sets the band apart is their heightened sense of melody. They steer the songs, and carve pathways through the distortion. They ache…they yearn, and they linger long after the track has collapsed. They prove that heaviness doesn’t have to sacrifice melody, and that melody doesn’t weaken intensity. Instead, the two feed each other, creating something vast, immersive, and deeply human.

This was a solid release. It was closer to the traditional side of the genre, but they did add their own personality to the music. If they would have taken a few more chances, and it could have gone from good to excellent.

This was an excellent album. When you talk about Black Metal, particularly the Symphonic variety, it can be a very cinematic listening experience. This album was for sure. There was also some transference involved as I was further immersed in the album, as if I could see the world through Valira’s eyes. The sights were no horrid, they were burned into my memory, but like witnessing a train derailment, you just can’t look away. With better production, however, this could have been outstanding

This was an excellent album. Although it’s steeped in the early traditions of the genre, there was just enough risk taking to please listeners with need for a wider range of sound, while not alienating the average fan of Black Metal. Their musicianship is strong, they followed their vision, and the songs were powerfully aggressive.

One of the best features of the album is how the band plunges you head first into deep, murky waters, to let you explore the darker side of things, only to bring you back by the end. It’s quite an emotional rollercoaster of sound, as only Post Rock instrumentals can levy.

The album has a constant push and pull that is like a ride on an old wooden rollercoaster. You are jarred back and forth at every turn, yet the experience is enjoyable and a total adrenaline rush. She has claws and fans, which can cut deep, but she also radiates warmth, simplicity, and acceptance. When you are in her presence, you can’t help but feel content.
