21 years after founding the band KILLUS, CHRISTIAN SUPERSIXX formed DAWN ZERO as a means to explore other musical ventures through industrial metal. He then wrote and put together this album titled "Black Celebration", an album that acts as a guild through inner demons. It was produced by CHRISTIAN SUPERSIXX himself at Dawn Studios. The album opens with the track "Vampires" as we hear chaos all around us. A drum roll sets things up as a killer heavy guitar riff hits with sirens go off in the back ground. The vocals come in which are slightly creepy, reminds me almost like MARYLIN MANSON and DOPE. The double bass from the drums just pounds away with this evil sound through-out. This is a really great groove filled opener that sets the tone.
Next up we have "Electricfire" as these dark synth sounds open the track with a count down. The song then really kicks off and it would make for a perfect floor filler at a goth club, some COMBICHRIST vibes. The track really gets you moving with its dark wave vibes being hinted at in the back ground. With eerie sounds from the start, "Pure Darkness" has this 80's dark wave feel to it with some goth vibes mixed in. A sort of synth melody picks the song up for the chorus and it is quite a dark song. Sounds of what could be a theremin play through the middle section which gives us an old classic horror movie vibe. Straight away then a piano melody brings the song down as we are then hit with one last chorus.
The title track "Black Celebration" opens like a horror movie with its synth sounds. The guitars come crashing over and the drums really build it up. Sinister sounds play through-out as the drums carry the song. The guitars strike back and, with its tone and sound, there is a very out there sounding lead guitar line that plays us out. The song is great. "Golden Word Of God" fades in with these other worldly sounds. A killer guitar riff hits and this song is a real head banger. It has a nice pace and is another track on here that will get you and moving. It is very atmospheric and the drums here are really cool too. Really enjoyed this one.
After that one we got "Devil's Party" with this really heavy and groove filled guitar riff. There is a nice drum beat and the synths add a nice layer over the heavy sounds. There is a lot of energy to this one and it has a bit of a catchy chorus. The lyrics are fun too, a sort of rave in hell. Everything works well here and I really like that guitar tone we hear through-out. Then we get "Crosses" and this one has such an evil sound. There is a really cool guitar riff that would get you moshing and dancing too. There is lots of great energy and the drums are the real back bone to this one as the synths add that dark atmosphere to it. A cool break down then hits and the song starts to build and you can really feel it. It builds to a pretty cool guitar solo and preps us for the song to close out.
Coming up towards the end of the album and we get a cover of the NINE INCH NAILS classic "Head Like A Hole". You can hear their influence in parts of this album which is probably why a cover appears here. DAWN ZERO really puts its own spin on this one though with a strong focus on the guitars carrying that groove. And they totally nail that iconic chorus line (you guys know the one I'm talking about). We then finally come to the appropriately titled "The Last Song" which has a very cyber sound to it. It is a lot slower and calmer than what we hear on the rest of this album. The vocals come in which sound very mournful. The guitars and drums then come in from out of nowhere and the synths add this epic feel to it all. There is a really big sounding chorus and a dirty sounding break down. The song goes on a bit of a journey as we come back for one final chorus. Great closer.
The production quality here on "Black Celebration" is really great. Dawn Zero gives me very MARYLIN MANSON, DOPE and ROB ZOMBIE vibes with the vocal style. The album is filled with nice grooves and killer beats. The drums and guitars are mixed well with all the synths and programming. There are some uses of samples from old horror movies and radio broadcasts that add to the chaotic nature of this album. I really enjoyed this album a lot. Instead of an abandoned warehouse this rave is taken place in hell.
