Euphorbia
Black Widows

It’s common to put many sets of musical expressions under a same musical genre to make things easier for writers (but it’s a true indisposition like after getting drunk from wine for the fans to understand things). Alternative Rock was something in this way in the 90s, because acts as MINISTRY, SONIC YOUTH, SOUNDGARDEN, SOUL ASYLUM and others were called like this. And to say that the Swiss act BLACK WIDOWS as an Alternative Rock/Metal band can cause confusions, what means that the best to do is to hear and experience “Euphorbia.” Maggie de Vault took the responsibility of producing the album (being assisted by Gregor Szabo), that was recorded at Black Hound Production Company, with mixing of Sebastian Schiess at SOS Basement Productions, and mastering by Dan Suter at Echochamber.
This team efforts created a crystal-clear sonority that fits on what they musically express. And the darkened and charming artwork is signed by Nina Nesnidal that makes the presentation of what is heard on the album. The main idea of the band is to fuse elements from Alternative Rock, Pop Music and Metal, what is already something ample and hard to define. It’s something made of contrasts of melancholic touches (clear inheritances of Post Punk and Gothic Rock, as heard on “The Battle”), energetic parts inherited from Hard Rock, hooking melodies, and with very good doses of energy. It’s different from the usual, and it’s really very good!
After “Initiation” (an instrumental intro), “Do You Even Know?”, “Worth It”, “Fear”, “The Battle”, “Dancing with the Shadow”, “Crossroads”, “Silence”, “Black Widow”, and “Hungry” offer different experiences from one song to the other, always balancing its influences (sometimes nasty and bombastic, sometimes tender and introspective), always keeping things hooking and hypnotic. Again: it’s different from the usual, so have patience and don’t be deceived by first impressions. “Euphorbia” is a fine heir of Swiss Rock/Metal DNA, and it’s proof that BLACK WIDOWS has a lot of potential to become a relevant act in the Rock scene.
