There have been plenty of acts that have been around for decades, some of them crossed a certain threshold that some people believe that it is straight away to retirement. However, it doesn't have to be like that and there have been plenty of examples showing the opposite, continue until you can't, fight them until you can't fight no more. One of the relics of British Metal are Black Rose, which were a different type of NWOBHM band back in the day.
