This album takes the listener on a journey that is sometimes rocky, and other times calm, and mirrors the seasons of your lives. Torture, anguish, and feeling like you want to jump out of your own skin are common, yet through it all, a string of hope remains threaded into the album. It’s moving, cathartic, and satisfying in the end.

This album was INTENSE. In the annals of the genre, the band chose to take the more pure road of mostly aggressive Death Metal where the guitar harmonies provide the melody, not clean vocals nor keyboards or the like. This is an uncompromising approach to the genre, by a clearly uncompromising band, ready to tackle new territory.

This was a fantastic album. It didn’t break any barriers or tread new ground necessarily, but the sound was genuine, honest, and punishing. Insert any euphemism you want…a swift kick to the teeth…a gritty punch in the balls…whatever it was, it will wake you up in the morning.

This was a fascinating slab of Black Metal in a few different ways. First, it often took unexpected turns, keeping the listener on their toes. Second, it brought a side of melody with it that was somber at times and oddly warm at others. Finally, there were progressive elements afoot, both in the music, and the meter. Who said Black Metal can’t be creative?

Although the band was trying to present another filthy album, it’s a bit on the safe side for me. Sure, some long term fans won’t like a 180, but there are plenty of ways to inject some diversity into the album, even capitalize on some of the more modern elements of Black Metal today. It was good, don’t get me wrong, just a bit too safe for me.

WARCOE hails from Pesaro, Italy. Formed in 2021, following the year of our plague, the Doom trio has been blazing a trail through the Italian Doom scene with one monumental album after the other. On September 26, 2025 they released their third full-length album, “Upon Tall Thrones,” which not only weighed in at 8/10 on the Metal Temple scales but hit #1 on Doom Charts for September 2025. This month Gary Hernandez, writer and editor for Metal Temple, was able to catch up with Stefano Fiorelli (guitars, vocals) to discuss the origin story of WARCOE, details of their latest album, and even speculate on the impacts of AI and streaming platforms.

Much of the album is devoted to the building of a towering atmosphere, and the band does that quite well. They talk about themes of forgotten sorrow, and cold landscapes, and that is exactly what I hear. It’s like a raging blizzard in middle of the arctic circle that lets up at the end just enough for you to see beams of sunlight.

I need to remind the listeners that this band is only one person, so right off, you have to give him props for that. That said, I found the music to be fairly solid. His command of several genres is noteworthy, although some of the songs bleed together a bit. Any fan of Extreme music should appreciate this album.

Nihili Locus – Semper

Overall, this was a despondent listening experience that had just enough anger to take the listener through a couple of different emotions. The raging elements were intense, in a way that makes them real. The somber tones served as a reminder that much of life is not one-sided, rather a bevy of experiences that we will all go through. You gotta hang on for the ride, no matter how dark it gets…and the album is that darkness.

Overall, this was a solid album in the steep traditions of Doom/Death Metal. It wasn’t anything overly original, but you get what you would expect here, and that is fine. The slow pace and near-death vocals kick you when you are down, and stomp on your head to make sure it stays there.

I found the album nearly exactly as advertised…psychological collapse, disillusionment, and torment, and then some. The fleeting moments of melody might serve as that last fray of sanity to keep you from completely going under, but this was an extremely dark and dreadful affair.
