Bitter Lucid Truth
Valletta
I’m not gonna lie, I wish there was more of this. It’s primal, raw, and fun to listen to all at the same time. When you listen to it, you just get the feeling that they are having a grand old time with recording and performing these songs, and sometimes this feeling gets lost in the music industry today.
Herezjarcha
Profane Elegy
“Herezjarcha” demonstrates a heightened level of songwriting and an impressive agility with shifts from the chaotic to the ordered. With an expanded lineup their trajectory has hit a serious upward inflection.
Remorse of Conscience
Agenbite Misery
An outstanding artifact of Blackened Experimental metal. Highly recommended to that not-so-rare intersection of literature geeks and metalheads.
The Monkey
High on Wheels
This was a fantastic album. It didn’t break any barriers or tread new ground necessarily, but the sound was genuine, honest, and punishing. Insert any euphemism you want…a swift kick to the teeth…a gritty punch in the balls…whatever it was, it will wake you up in the morning.
Merged In Abstract Perdition
Undersave
The sound of “Merged In Abstract Perdition” is technical with progressive elements and plenty of twists and turns in tempo and rhythm, all based on a grim melodic framework
Extinguish All Existence
Enragement
“Extinguish All Existence” is brutal Death Metal at high quality, driven by punishing guitar riffs, blast-beat attacks, and growling vocals coming straight from the abyss
Guld
Orm
This was a fascinating slab of Black Metal in a few different ways. First, it often took unexpected turns, keeping the listener on their toes. Second, it brought a side of melody with it that was somber at times and oddly warm at others. Finally, there were progressive elements afoot, both in the music, and the meter. Who said Black Metal can’t be creative?
Divinum Sanguinem
Ildaruni
I was most impressed by the high level of musicianship the band has, in addition to their strong sense of songwriting. Black Metal doesn’t need to remain in the shadows, with bad production and an overly thickened sound, and ILDARUNI prove this point on “Divinum Sanguinem.”
Crypts of Eternity
Fäust
Considering that this entire album was composed and performed by a single musician, it gives the listener some gravity to consider. The songs were well composed, and the aggression was held in check at times in order to let somber melodies enter. This was a solid release.
The Baroness Sessions
Jason Bieler And The Baron Von Bielski Orchestra
It’s not a stretch to say that The Baroness has one of the best voices in the music industry today. Her voice control and sense of pitch is astonishing, and Jason’s music lays a soft featherbed underneath her so that she is free to express herself…and sing she does. This album is bursting with emotion, substance, and style, and I am so very glad I have the chance to enjoy it.
Dysthymia
Harvested
Dysthymia is a declaration of war from the Canadian underground. This is death metal that bleeds, breathes, and still bites.

For The Souls We Have Lost
Harvest
Overall, this was a solid album to listen to, and the vocalist was the perfect choice, because his bass voice carries much of the sound. It alternates between a crippling depression, and moments of rage, and the melancholy tones are deliciously smoky.
Diabolic Formation
Pale Horse Ritual
If you’re going to model your sound around the Godfathers of Metal, BLACK SABBATH, that’s a good choice. Unfortunately, that sound was popular 55 years ago. Although some bands are indeed timeless, I would have liked to have heard more of this band’s individual personality in their music. The world just doesn’t need another BLACK SABBATH clone.
Faces
Zombie Eater
This was a delightfully gooey album that had a thick, dark groove for months…even years. The riffs were covered in soot, and you come out soiled and defiled in the end, but the smile on your face will last a lifetime.
Draksophia
Ofermod
Although the band was trying to present another filthy album, it’s a bit on the safe side for me. Sure, some long term fans won’t like a 180, but there are plenty of ways to inject some diversity into the album, even capitalize on some of the more modern elements of Black Metal today. It was good, don’t get me wrong, just a bit too safe for me.
Guilded Abyss
Valdur
This was an absolutely frightening, and deadly album. Their conglomeration of Death and Black metal combined into something so black and so pure, it’s evil personified. Sometimes, we all need an album like this to remind us that some things aren’t salvageable, aren’t savable, and are as empty as the void itself.
Destructive Elite Terror
Det
The songs all have that kind of vibe that will remind you of bands like MIDNIGHT and early AGENT STEEL, only a little (or if you will, a lot) rougher around the edges. It sounds like DET have decided to leave all their tunes as pure and unedited as possible. And even though I would liked to have a better production, I have to admit that the way that this is done really fits the bill.
Deadman
Distorta
DISTORTA is able to demonstrate that you can make an Extreme form of Metal without only being angry, disillusioned, desperate or desolate during that whole process. Nope, “Deadman” is proof that DISTORTA makes the sort of Extreme Metal that can also be lots of fun to make for a band.
Premature Exequie (Reissue)
Omicidio
You can hear that the band didn’t have the funds to give their recordings a full-on production sound. Would that have mattered?
Ephemeral Triumphs
Relicon
It took me some time, but I have to admit that I warmed up to the music on “Ephemeral Triumphs”. It’s not bad at all and if you are one of those who likes their music a bit alternative, you really should check out what RELICON is all about.
Ashspawn
Enthroned
Overall, this was in line with what you might expect from a band that has been around this long. It was of course a solid release, and a menacing listening experience, but I just wish the band would have taken a few more chances. Long time fans don’t always like that, but it does help a seasoned band keep up better with the times.
Ascension
Paradise Lost
Even after their storied career seems ready to fade into the rear view mirror, PARADISE LOST shows how they got to where they are in the first place with “Ascension.” As its base, it is Gothic Metal, as dark as night shadows, but it is also so much more. It’s rich, diverse, catchy, and vital. Rather than rely on past success, they forge a new path forward. I have to assume they found the fountain of youth, because how else could one explain the magic on this, their 17th album to date.
Teufelskult
Häxär
“Teufelskult” is an impressive third offering from V Noir and his HÄXÄR project, a testimony to the depth of BM.
Fear
Glasya
GLAYSA has sealed their reputation amongst female-fronted Symphonic Metal bands with “Fear.”
Nemofilista
Tanvald
Much of the album is devoted to the building of a towering atmosphere, and the band does that quite well. They talk about themes of forgotten sorrow, and cold landscapes, and that is exactly what I hear. It’s like a raging blizzard in middle of the arctic circle that lets up at the end just enough for you to see beams of sunlight.
Generation Of The Void
Nailed To Obscurity
NAILED TO OBSCURITY deliver darkness and melancholy in their new release. “Generation Of The Void” is an interesting mixture of melodic Death Metal with Doom elements and some Gothic Twists
Cold Flare Eternal
Before The Dawn
“Cold Flare Eternal” is a mixture of a variety of genres and subgenres, including melodic Death Metal, Gothic influences, and a few melodic Metalcore twists
III - Candles & Beginnings
Auri
The songs on “III - Candles & Beginnings” themselves are not bad at all, if this is the kind of music you like. They have all been composed and played in a good way, giving room to all the instruments as well as the multiple layers of voices. If you ever need a respite from the heavy and loud noises of your Metal addiction, this might be a good antidote.
Achtung!
Curse Of Cain
Movie Metal? Really? That is how the music that CURSE OF CAIN plays is described in their EPK. To me this is just a modern take on a mix between Melodic Rock and Metalcore with Nu-Metal.
Destroyer
Eld Varg
The name ELD VARG is a Swedish one, and it means FIRE WOLF. I too agree, it sounds better in Swedish.as for what kind of Heavy Metal that is on “Destroyer”, it is the simple and straight variety. Nothing elaborate or intricate is being done here.
Depths Below
Henret
HENRET doesn’t waste a moment when starting in trying to blow you off your socks or out of your chair. The amount of noise, the level of intensity and the amount of anger and mountain of frustration that is being vomited over you by means of your speakers is undoubtedly of the highest level that I ever have experienced.
