Young Hunter - Dayhiker album cover

Once more, Big Daddy here has to say the same words: in this time we are living, there are swarms from bands in some Metal genres that are part of a strange trend. It's a problem, because the good bands become hard to find in the middle of the tsunami of innumerous bands and discs. Although it's not so bad, the quintet YOUNG HUNTER must put more efforts in the composing process. "Dayhiker" is here to show the deeper meaning of my words.

They use a Doom/Stoner Metal approach, so you can expect a greasy musical form with slow tempos and nasty atmosphere. But the most interesting feature of their music is their melodic insight. Yes, there are moments when their melodies are hooking and tender, so the album is not a loss of time. But as well, they could focus their efforts on this direction, because Doom/Stoner Metal is an evident genre for now, and the more personal you sound, the better for yourself.

Raw in a way that can't affect the melodies of the sound clarity, the sonority of "Dayhiker" is very good. It's good to sound in this way, different from the moldy sound that we are used to hear from bands of their musical genre. It could be a bit cleaner, but it's not bad at all.

On the seven songs of "Dayhiker" we can feel that their musical talent goes beyond what we hear. But as they seem to be searching for a better approach for their work, we can say that the bitter and even melancholic "In the Shadow of the Serpent", the good and raw melodies that are heard on "Entered Apprentice" (very good keyboards parts can be heard here), the fine melodic guitars on "Hunger", and the long and charming "Black Mass" with its very good vocals and solid rhythmic work are their best moments. But once more: they can do better than that. I truly hope that they can evolve a bit more, because they are good.
