I Am Legion
Witchery
Be aware, for the Swedish Hounds of Hell are back again to unleash Satan's Black/Thrash fury on the Earth!!!! Yes, WITCHERY is back for one more round, and with a new album, the brutal and grasping Hellspawn called "I Am Legion".
As always, their musical aggressiveness and fury know no boundaries, as their technique is really amazing. Their mix of Black Metal elements with Thrash Metal insight is working perfectly as always, but on this album, as the band's lineup is unchanged since "In His Infernal Majesty's Service", it's clear that the band's music became solid, but as well is more bitter and brutal than before. It's like WITCHERY has found a new sound format, without losing their personality. So be prepared, for they'll open the gates of Gehenna for you all!
Once more, Daniel Bergstrand worked with them as producer and mixed "I Am Legion", having Jensen with him on the production. The mastering was done by Lawrence Mackrory. They created a brutal and aggressive sonority, but always with that clear aesthetics that makes everything even more aggressive that already is. The artwork created by Andreas Diaz Pettersson is really very good.
Be prepared, for this black mass is always starting, because you must know their guests for "I Am Legion": Hank Shermann plays lead guitars on "A Faustian Deal", as Mike Wead does the same on "Welcome, Night"; Niels Nielsen made the keyboards intro for "True North", and Jouni Havukainen made the samples and sound effects for "Great Northern Plague". And Nicholas Barker made additional vocals as the "creepy doorman" on "Welcome, Night" (but why in the blazes he's not playing some drums on the album? It's a mortal sin).
The slow paced and aggressive guitars of the oppressive "True North", the excellent riffs and solos of "Welcome, Night" (what abrasive and climatic melodic lines), the seductive rhythm of "Of Blackened Wing" (where some CELTIC FROST influences arose) and "Dry Bones", the force feed of abusive energy show on "Amun-Ra" with its nasty Thrash/Crossover influence and nasty shrieked screams, the outstanding brutality of bass guitar and drums shown on the excellent "A Faustian Deal", the dark charm of "An Unexpected Guest", the pile driving rawness of brutality that can be heard on "The Alchemist" and "Ragnarök", and the atmospheric bitter weight of guitars on "Apex Ghoul" are the demons that will enchant your soul (or you can say that are the finest songs of the album as well).
Once more: "I Am Legion" came too late for be amongs the best albums of 2017, but for sure this new gospel of WITCHERY will be on 2018's best album of many fans.
