They Rot Beneath Our Floor

Engorgement

To put your mind at ease, these guys not only know how to write Brutal Death Metal songs that will make your brain explode in order to paint the walls and ceiling, they are also able to make sure that all the instruments are not only sounding good, but distinguishable. Hats off to the production team!

When you get an album with a title like "They Rot Beneath Our Floor", you know you are in for a rough ride. When the band in question is called ENGORGEMENT, your spider senses become even more apparent, causing you to brace yourself in your chair, ready for the assault. All these issues disappear when the intro "Prelude To Your Dismemberment", as the mellow sounds and rhythms will lull into a false sense of security, making you even ignore the title for a moment. But when "Keep Festering" kicks in you are brought back to reality in the most brutal way. Because the Brutal Death Metal that is escaping your speakers will not only blow you mind into a zillion tiny bits, it feels even more like the most powerful hit than an atomic bomb exploding up your arse would.

These four guys all reside in the UK, and I do know that things are kind of shite there right now, but as ENGORGEMENT has been making unsavoury noises since 2009, they do have some experience in handling bad times. I was very surprised to find that "They Rot Beneath Our Floor" is only their second album to date, released some 14 years after their debut album "Excruciating Intestinal Lacerations", which for some reason I haven't heard. And to put your mind at ease, these guys not only know how to write very Heavy songs that will make your brain explode in order to paint the walls and ceiling, they are also able to make sure that all the instruments are not only sounding good, but distinguishable. Hats off to the production team!

As for the vocals, what they remind me of is when a sow and a boar start mating, and the coinciding sounds that you might encounter. The lower grunts of the boar are really low when he gives her stick, and the happy squeals of the sow are very convincing when she receives said stick. What does become clear is that the further along the album we get, the boar is getting more and more fatigued, concentrating more on the breeding than on making noise. The sow however makes up for it in spades, as she sounds almost delirious towards the end. But seriously, I feel that the way the vocals are tied into the well-structured music makes "They Rot Beneath Our Floor" into a worthwhile album. If you ask me that means that ENGORGEMENT has done good.
