Monotot
Winterbult
In the first half of the 90's, as everybody already knows, a new form of playing Black Metal was conceived and appeared from the depths of underground on Sweden, Norway, Greece and other countries throughout the world. A new paradigm was established back them, and some still follow such format. One of them is the German one man band WINTERBLUT, a veteran with 26 years on its shoulders on the scene, and its new release is out now, "Monotot".
It's that old and classic format of Black Metal: funereal, dense and morbid, with a simple technical approach, based on bitter ambiances and slow paced rhythms (besides there are fast parts), a German insight on SWOBM models. It can be compared to early works of BURZUM in some moments, but with a personal insight. It's primitive and nasty, but it's the way the band is into since its early days, so one can love it or hate it, but its work is honest.
The problem of "Monotot" resides on its sonority. To sound crude and nasty doesn't mean that it must be in a way that seems to be recorded on a single track radio recording device. This doesn't mean that it can't be raw and dusty, but it can be done in a better way, because everything sounds low, the guitar riffs almost disappear. A listening to WATAIN last album can be a proof of how can be aggressive and nasty, but powerful as well.
The 9 songs of the album are extremely personal, even being on a SWOBM trend. "Monotot" (a funeral and slow paced song, with a bitter ambiance, shows good guitars, besides the tunes are extremely low), "Lebaendigen" (this one show some good fast parts, with a good rhythmic work), "Ayam Mysla al Tawabeet" (good vocals can be heard on personal shrieked tunes), "Köpfe mit Nägeln" (with that traditional speed heard on old BATHORY albums), and "in Verschlossener Gesellschaft" are the best ones for a first time on the band's musical work.
Even an ancient can evolve, that WINTERBLUT can do such thing, besides the fans will love "Monotot" for sure.
