Winter Calling - As Darkness Falls album cover

When we are dealing with North American bands, we must keep in mind that a main feature that those lands, even when we are talking about some extreme Metal styles, that is very important is the instrumental technique along with melodies.

Yes, since the 70s, when Metal arose in many parts of the world, bands from U.S.A. always had a more refined musical technique, along with a good feeling for melody. And that's not a sin, for many excellent bands as THE RODS, QUEENSRYCHE and many others had this feature. And as good as them is the quartet WINTER CALLING, which released "As Darkness Falls", a fine album.

It's a very good and tasteful Rock/Hard Rock band, using very good technical level, but the most important feature of their music is the melodies. Using some Progressive moments during all the songs, with some doses of weight and hooking choruses, and some more aggressive moments here and there. And the final result is a very good and tender music, as well as creative.

The sound quality that they reached is very good, being clear as they need in their more Progressive and tender moments, but having a very good dose of aggressiveness when needed (for some riffs are really distorted and abrasive).

As I said earlier, their musical work is pretty good, having their better moments on "A World I Can Feel" (very fine and tender, having some good Progressive moments given by their musical technique and good use of piano, along with very good changes on tempos, and some harsher and heavier moments, where guitars shows what they can do), the introspective and melodic "Self-Righteous Parade", the elegant "Forever" (with a very good melodic and aggressive insight, where the vocals show good diversity of tunes), the ethereal and almost Progressive "Find My Way", and the technical and tender instrumental "108". Of course the album as a whole has a great and melodic Progressive Rock orientation, but it's fine.

A good name, indeed, but their potential is greater than we can hear here.
