Infernal Overdrive
White Wizzard
Sometimes, when some bands deal with old Metal ways, they can find something interesting to show. There's no formula to reach this point, just the idea that you must sound alive and with energy. Having this in mind, we can say that the Californian band WHITE WIZZARD is really a very good band, as we hear on "Infernal Overdrive".
They take influences from bands as ICED EARTH, SANCTUARY, and something from NWOBHM (especially IRON MAIDEN) and earlier Power Metal, and their musical work reminds a lot the way of what I always call US Metal, the way the North American bands of traditional Heavy Metal plays. Their musical genre is nothing new at all, but in their hands, it sounds so good to our ears that we can't resist their melodies.
The sound quality that "Infernal Overdrive" presents is very good. It is heavy, aggressive and clean in the right proportions, allowing the listener to understand what is being played. Of course, the production isn't perfect, but the band reached a very good level of quality on the sound, indeed.
On their nine songs, these guys show a good potential to make great music. But for now, the aggressive and excellent "Infernal Overdrive" with its very good guitars, the melodic insight of traditional Heavy Metal shown on "Storm the Shores" (that shows a very good work on bass guitar and drums) and on "Pretty May" (the guitar duets are really catchy), the long and enriched with very good rhythmic changes "Voyage of the Wolf Raiders", the heavy and technical insight on the melodies of "Critical Mass", and the excellent contrasts between melodic and tender moments with heavy ones heard on "The Illusion's Tears" are their best moments on the album.
The band is really fine, the vocalist has a very good voice (but needs to work on some aspects, because his high-pitched screams sometimes don't work in the best way possible), and some improvements and they'll get far in Metal.
