Siberian Heathen Horde
Welicoruss
The end of the dictatorial government of Eastern Europe (that was commanded by the Communist Party on Moscow) allowed the word to know the potential that Eastern Metal could bring to the world. Of course that some names already existed behind the iron curtain in the 80's, but as the wall of Berlin felt, and East met West in the 90's, things improved a lot. And the work of the Russian quartet WELICORUSS is a fruit of such liberty, because it's almost impossible to an album as "Siberian Heathen Horde" be released under a dictatorship.
It's a form of Melodic/Symphonic Black Metal that uses different influences to create their songs (even some Gothic Rock touches can be heard on the vocals in some moments, and even some Pagan/Folk touches are presented on some parts), so their musical work sounds grandiose due the orchestrations, but it bears that harsh aggressive feeling of Black Metal as well. And it's charming, melodic, but creative and showing and hypnotic insight. Nicholas Coolidge took care of the recording sessions, and Alyaxey Stetsyukis the one who made the mixing and mastering of "Siberian Heathen Horde". Besides many names of the genre prefers something extremely grandiose and clean, the quartet used a clean insight, but bearing some nasty organic instrumental tunes (especially on the guitars), what fits perfectly on what their music needs.
Their musical work left behind the use of Russian on the lyrics to an English insight (what can open many doors to the band), and the album is amazing on all the songs. But to a first time on their work, "Spellcaster" (a fine blend between sinister and beautiful orchestrations with nasty guitar arrangements), "Siberian Heathen Horde" (the use of Gothic Rock elements can be heard clearly on this song on the vocals contrasts, giving to it an accessible catchy outfit), "Path of Seductions" (this song has a somber and deeper ambiance, and it hooks the listeners, and what a very good work from bass guitar and drums), "Frostbounded" (a song with contrasts between aggressive moments and somber parts), and "The Prophecy" are the ones that must be heard. The rest of the album is amazing in the same way.
WELICORUSS's musical work is mature, and "Siberian Heathen Horde" is an album that deserves to be heard (and enjoyed) to its fullest!
