Doomicvs Vobisvum
Weird Light
Doom Metal has some different forms to be played, and two principal ways are: to be elegant and melancholic, as MY DYING BRIDE uses to be on their albums, and the second is the classical way that CANDLEMASS and WITCHFINDER GENERAL, with a nasty and heavier way to play. Both ways are good, and these words are just to state this clearly. Now we are ready to speak about the French duo WEIRD LIGHT that is dead since 2008 and only released one demo CD. This is what we have here, called "Doomicvs Vobisvum" that is being released officially by Shadow Kingdom Records. Their musical essence is based on the roots of Doom Metal...that nasty, slow and heavy method, with that influential slowness that BLACK SABBATH presented in earlier works. It's nothing really new at all, but the way they play their music is personal, and it sounds so good.
David Nattes made the recording of the songs from "Doomicvs Vobiscvm," and the mixing was done by Cédric Cabrit and F. Faust (the band's bassist). The final result is a bitter and heavy sound quality...organic and without the modern resources we have today. It reminds the earlier work from the style, but without using some kind of "musical recipe" to do so. But don't be worried: you can understand what the band is playing. Originally, the demo CD had only two songs, "Obsidian Temple" and "Gogmagog (Under the Trumpets of Doom)", two very good songs with good instrumental parts and vocals that seems to be from "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" in some moments. "Conspiracy of the Dead" was recorded, but wasn't released on the demo, but it is here, being bitter and full of that raw energy of the style and very good riffs. "Stare in the Dark" was released on cassette, that was to be released on a split EP with RISING DUST, and it is here on this album was well, with that dusty and sinister feeling and tempos.
So, it's very good to see this collection of songs out in an official release. But, we hope that the label could consider the possibility of releasing their legendary album that is still locked on a shelf.
