Epilogue
Weight of the Tide
In terms of Doom/Stoner Metal and Sludge Metal, both subgenres arose on the 90. They gathered many musical influences, and it's good to see and hear its evolution throughout all these years. But not all bands from both styles are really into the main thing of Stoner/Doom and Sludge. It has nothing to do with playing slowly or with oiled tunes, but it's a matter of heart and soul into the musical work itself. Playing with free will is the main key to a great work. And of course, the North American quartet from Reno (Nevada) WEIGHT OF THE TIDE knows how to do things in their own way, but with soul, heart and will. On the album "Epilogue", it really can be heard.
Their music is based on Doom/Stoner Rock with some Sludge Metal features, tons of groove and heavy as a mammoth, remind us from works of C.O.C. on their stoner era and a bit of MONSTER MAGNET. But on their work, there's an influence extremely strong from Rock'n'Roll as well, due some catching melodies. And this makes their heavy sound gain some accessibility to a broader public. We can say that they have a very good work done by vocals (melodic and aggressive in normal tunes), the same for the guitar (with catching riffs), and a heavy rhythmic kitchen, all of them with a good technical level, but in a tasteful musical work.
The quality of the sound we hear is very heavy and sometimes bitter, but always with a clean insight. So we can say that their music sounds abrasive and heavy, but always with clarity for our ears understand what is being played.
There are seven good songs on "Epilogue", all of them with its own value. But "Big Daddy" here dares to point to the melodic and heavy "Ireland" (with some catching riffs being played and filling the music with groove), the bitter and introspective "Proper Goodbye" (the solos reminds a lot the European school of traditional Heavy Metal), the accessible "Turning Point", and the charming "La Puerta".
Very talented band, let's say that.
