The world now is extremely different from 35 years in the past. After the fall of Berlin Wall in 1990, freedom became known on east countries of Europe, on lands that were severely dominated by the communist/socialist regime. The end of the fear of a impending nuclear war is gone, so Metal, the true sound of liberty, could grow on countries where it wasn't heard, or then, was heard in secret, in fear of the oppression of communist state. Only a blind would deny the facts and whispers for such regime. And the fruits of freedom are many, as we can see an invasion of good Metal bands from countries that were oppressed by Soviet communism. And now, from Romania, comes the sextet WALK THE ABYSS, unleashing its musical fury on "The Disclosure Between Surface and Self".

Hearing their music, we can feel the true voice of freedom, because they are a Death Metal band using some elements of Deathcore and Djent Metal, so it's a bit different than usual. Their work is brutal and oppressive, but has a good technical insight under the explosive music they play. Very good guttural grunts along high pitched shrieks, a wall of oppressive and solid guitar riffs, and a technical and heavy rhythmic kitchen are the elements of their songs, but beware of their brutal insight, for it can cause complains from your neighborhood.

The production the band got gave their work a good quality. It's thunderous and heavy as Hell, brutal and clean. Yes, it's very clear for us to access all the details of their musical work. So, we can say easily say: brutal with quality, and that's all.

They have a set of very good songs, in a homogeneous work, with tempos being, in the greater part of time slow and abrasive, but of course some fast moments are present. And we can take the brutal "The Unknown" (with some strong and catching riffs and good tempo changes), the catching and heavy "Frailty of the Human Form" (very good contrast between shrieks and grunts), the fast and destructive impact of "Imp of the Perverse", the catching and charming "Go Get a Bigger Shovel" (that even under such a brutal and oppressive song, there are fine melodies done by guitars and bass), and the more technical "Mariana's Trench".

A fine work, indeed.<
