Witchcraft Warfare
Vuohi
Finland is a country that started to show its potential to breed Metal bands at the end of the 80's/beginning of the 90's. Today, along with Sweden and Norway, they export great numbers of Metal bands, from every single genre that exists. But in extreme Metal genres, Finnish bands have a deeper feature that can't be described with words, but felt with hearts, what can be called the "Finnish extreme Metal DNA", the very same thing we can find on "Witchcraft Warfare", VUOHI's first full length (after a series of Demos and one split album).
They're playing a blend of Black Metal and Death Metal in the same way of names as IMPALED NAZARENE and BEHERIT did in the beginning of the 90s: putrid, crude and brutally aggressive. Obviously, they have guts and personality in a way that their work can be said as promising for a near future, because under this sharp and aggressive form of music, it's easy to catch the good melodic and harmonic care they took to build their songs. They still have a way to go, but are on the right path. The sound quality of the album is crude, and it's beyond the right point. Obviously the band tried to catch the old spirit of Finnish Death/Black Metal, but not as raw as those old albums. We can understand what is being played, but their music deserves something with a better aesthetics (the instrumental tunes are right). But it's just a matter of time until they have a professional on this matter at their side.
Being 80% a Black Metal sound with 20% of Death Metal and Thrash Metal influences, "Witchcraft Warfare" bears eight very good songs. And "Witchcraft Warfare" with its brutal assault (using a lot of 90s' Black Metal elements), the HC touch on some parts of "Pissing o.t.N.F.", the pile driving work from bass guitar and drums on "Arsonist Dreams", and the deeper and melancholic parts of "Ziᛏ" (great vocals and guitars) can be named as the best shots of the album. VUOHI is really an excellent and promising name, and "Witchcraft Warfare" will rip apart your ears!
