Vintersorg - Till Fjälls

After three years, a new VINTERSORG arrives, and it seems to be establishing a link with the band's past, due its name, "Till Fjälls, Del II", a second part of "Till Fjälls", their first album. Once more with all lyrics written on Swedish language (or apparently, and if I'm wrong about this matter, I'm truly sorry), but the band's style is the very same of all their works: an excellent blend between Folk/Viking Metal with Progressive Metal influences and some nasty and aggressive vocals inherited from Black Metal. The band's experience gives a help to make things even better, more elegant, so we can say that evolution took its tool to make the band more elegant and really great. But I still miss some of the musical inspiration that was presented to us on albums like "Cosmic Genesis", "Visions from the Spiral Generator" and "The Focusing Blur". But "Till Fjälls, Del II" is a great album, indeed.

Again, Vintersorg took all the duties of production, including recording, engineering, mixing, and mastering the album (as well as he wrote all the songs and lyrics). Mattias Marklund made some recording for additional lead guitars. So we can say that the sound quality of the album is very good, balancing musical weight, aggressiveness and sound clarity. You won't have reasons for complains, because you can hear and understand what the band is playing. The instrumental tunes are in a great form (except for the drums, because the programmed tunes are good, but not excellent). The artwork and cover were done by the hands of Marcelo Vasco, from PR2 Designs (the same one who made SLAYER's cover for "Repentless"), and once more, the visual result is amazing.

With David Nilsson (additional vocals on "Obygdens Pionjär") and Cia Hedmark (female voices on "Vårflod") as special guests, "Till Fjälls, Del II" shows its values. There are two discs: on the first one, elegant and energetic songs as "Jökelväktaren" (with its fine guitars and keyboards parts), "En Väldig Isvidds Karga Dräkt" (the shortest of all, showing great Folk clean parts and excellent contrast between clean and shrieked vocals, along with grandiose choruses), "Fjällets Mäktiga Mur" (the excellent balance Progressive and extreme parts is amazing), the amazing "Vinterstorm" (where the guitars and the rhythmic session are doing a great work), and the tender "Vårflod" (with its excellent female vocals) are the best songs. The second disc, called "Tillbaka Till Källorna" shows its best moments on "Köldens Borg" (where a Folk essence gives a warm and tender insight), "Portalen" (where the aggressive side of the band is more evident, with fine extreme vocals and brutal melodies, besides some introspective clean moments can be heard), and on "Svart Måne" their more introspective, melodic and Folk side is shown (with the focus on vocals, clean guitars and tender melodic lines from keyboards).

A great work from VINTERSORG, and it's good to see that he is healthy and as strong as ever!
