Triacanthos - Apotheosis album cover

As Black Metal came to be more accepted as a commercial genre, many bands in different countries came to start a movement of radicalism, to part their ways with bands that earned great attention. In the USA, bands started to keep things more deep in the underground as they could. A kind of 'for passion, not for fashion' way of thinking, you know. And TRIACANTHOS seems to follow such way, as can be heard on "Apotheosis".

Their musical work sounds as the early Black Metal acts of North American Black Metal School: primitive, rough and aggressive, but in a way that can be understood. But even with a musical work that isn't using an accurate musical technique, they show that they know how to create very good morbid moments (because the band evades light speed tempos), and focus on the aggressive side. Of course this formula was used many times in the past, but the trio works in a way that Black metal fans will be seduced. The production was done to be crude and evade anything that could be extremely polite. It's simple and dry, in a way that reinforces the idea of something 'organic'. They play fast and brutal, but in a way that is comprehensible for the fans.

The morbid and climatic "Maledictio en Spinis Coepit" (very good shrieks laid on a slow and funereal instrumental sheath) and of "Rite of Recalling", the nasty approach used on the guitars of "Apotheosis" and "Pagan North", the fast and massive Black Metal energy shown on "Procession of the Aeons", and the catchy approach of "Morningstar" are the best ones. But the homage they did to the North American Black metal legend JUDAS ISCARIOT on "Eternal Bliss... Eternal Death" is really charming.

TRIACANTHOS is really a promising name in North American Black metal, and I hope that "Apotheosis" is just the beginning.
