Tocacake - Enfermés album cover

Thanks to the technological advances in computers and the internet, today is easy to get in touch with new and different musical works done worldwide. Because, in the times when the internet didn't exist, the main idea was that some countries were drown into only one or two musical genres. Back in the 90's, everyone thought that there was only Black Metal bands in Norway, or Death Metal in Sweden. So it's easy to hear a band as the French quartet TOCACAKE, and their work "Enfermés" can be faced and something no usual for French Metal scene, but not unexpected.

A mix between New York Hardcore in the vein of BIOHAZARD and BAD BRAINS, with Rapcore influences and some touches from New Metal is how they express their musical ideas (and there are many non-Metal influences in many parts, as can be heard on the Reggae/Ska groove influence presented on "I Walk"). It's something that is unusual for French scene (that is based in extreme Metal genres), but it's not something bad, besides it's nothing that is really new at all (remembering that no one is asking the band to reinvent the wheel).

The production of "Enfermés" is very good. The mix and sound engineering were done by the hands of Fred Duquesne, and Pierrick Noël is the one who mastered the songs. Their option was for something clean and defined, but with tunes that are far from the usual modern tunes. It's a more traditional set of instrumental tunes, what allowed the quartet to have a clean musical expression. It's a very good work, indeed.

For the fans of such genre, songs as "New Friends" (a massive Hip Hop groove tempered with distorted guitars), "Tous Enfermés" (an abrasive energy contrasting with Rap/Hip Hop parts), "Think About It" and "Nos Larmes Citoyens" (both songs are filled with Rap/Hip Hop influences, but with a melodic and catchy appeal), and "I Walk" and "Ferme ta Gueule" are the ones for a first time on their music. TOCACAKE can be faced as a Metal band with strong Hip Hop/Rapcore influences, or as a Hip Hop/Rapcore band with Metal influences. And "Enfermés" is a good release, indeed.
