The classic form of Hard Rock suffered many mutations throughout the years, in its need to keep alive, something similar to Darwin's scientific ideas expressed in "On the Origin of Species". And one root of such process can be heard on METALLICA's "Metallica" (the so-called "Black Album", the one that brought their music into a more palatable form to a broader public, bringing the band into a more Hard Rock form than Thrash Metal). That's not a mere that THE MIGHT ONE's new album, "Torch of Rock 'n' Roll" is so good to be heard.

It's the blend of the old melodic and grasping form of the genre with a modern (and heavier) approach, and it's not a sin to say that they have influences from names as KISS, METALLICA, ZZTOP, FOO FIGHTERS, and others, but always with a personal way of being. There are bone crushing heavy and aggressive parts, but some deep and melodic moments as well, and the trio is able to make such contrasts make sense, along the very creative hooking choruses. Resuming things: it's really a very good album!

The band produced "Torch of Rock 'n' Roll" itself, having Dave Padden taking care of the mixing and mastering. The result: at the same time that it sounds crude and heavy, it's defined and clean in a way that anyone can understand what that they're playing. The rough feeling comes from the simple instrumental tunes chosen. And some guests are presented on the album, as Colin Glennie, Rob Breti, Scott Enns, Ira Gibbons and James Meyer.

Musically, the maturity of these Canadian Rock 'n' Roll madmen can be heard during all the songs. But for a first time on the band's musical work, the abrasive catchy melodic groove of "Coming On" (very good work on bass guitar and drums, indeed), the 'shadow-light' contrasts of "Torch of Rock and Roll" (where the vocals fit perfectly on the changes, but always keeping the good interpretation), the deep and introspective richness of "So High", the frantic and abrasive Hard Rock/Rock 'n' Roll approach of "Disruptor" and "Master of Reality" (fine guitar parts on both songs), and the 'sabbathic' slow and heavy tempos of "My Garden" will do the due introduction.

It's just their third album, so let's hope that these Sasquatches can bring more good songs as can be heard on "Torch of Rock 'n' Roll". The world needs more bands as THE MIGHTY ONE.
