When you are introduced to Gothic Rock from the 80s, you'll understand why some fans of this particular musical genre refuse to recognize the label "Gothic Metal". Although I'm a Metalhead, I have the very same idea, because the melancholy and introspective feeling of the so-called "Gothic Metal" bands are an evolution from Doom Metal, not an influence that can be traced to names as BAUHAUS, THE MISSION, THE SISTERS OF MERCY, JOY DIVISION and earlier works from THE CULT (and these bands had/have a Pop orientation in many moments). But if you want to see an evolution of Gothic Rock, be prepared, for "Canto V", the new release from the German quintet THE FRIGHT.

They aren't a Gothic Rock band necessarily, but stay in a way that mixes influences from the style with some features from Sleazy Rock and even subjective touches from Glam Metal. You can feel the energy on the distorted guitars (and even some charming solos), the bass guitar and drums are playing heavy and technical, and the vocals are excellent in this ample range of tunes. So you can have some introspective moments from Gothic Rock along with a very good touch of musical accessibility and some weight, something that really sounds new and fresh. To produce an album like this, an experienced producer was required, and the name of the legendary producer Waldermar Sorychta was chosen. With albums as "Wildhoney" and "Wolfheart" on his curriculum (to name some), was the right choice, because he build something that is heavy and clear in the same way, and with excellent instrumental tunes. It was not an easy task, but he did it in a great way.

"Canto V" has excellent songs, with charming melodies and excellent choruses, but it's hard to believe that songs as the charming "Bonfire" with its perfect mix of aggressive guitars and Gothic vocals, the accessible catchy energy that is presented on "No One" and "Wander Alone" (both with a clear Pop influence, but with excellent bass and drums works), "Love is Gone" and "Fade Away" and their clear Gothic Rock introspective touch (both on different ways, mind you), the raw energy of Glam Rock of "Leave", and the charming and seductive harmonies of "Century Without a Name" aren't playing on your home, cars or musical players. And the other songs I didn't mention are excellent as well.

THE FRIGHT is an excellent band, and "Canto V" is an amazing album, indeed! Buy it at any cost!
