Reveries...
Supuration
Traditional Death Metal will always awake great discursions. Yes, the style still has great amounts of fans and bands, besides some of them do not understand that what is done is done, and new comers cannot do anything more that DISMEMBER, MORBID ANGEL, GOREFEST, DEATH, MASTER, ENTOMBED, PESTILENCE and another ancient Death Metal ones did in the 90's. But of course there are some ancient bands active, doing the same sound they always did, and for them, we can't expect something out of their main sound features. And this is the case of the French quartet SUPURATION, that is active since 1990, and that now comes with their new album, "Reveries...", a bolt of pure Death Metal in the way of the 90s.
As my words above turns the things clear, in "Reveries..." you won't find something new at all, and no modern influences, just Death Metal the brutal and direct way, with some Doom Death Metal influences, in the same vein of the ancients from the 90's. Guttural grunts and harsh screams on vocals, abusive distorted riffs (with some technique), and an extreme heavy and powerful rhythmic session, and with these elements, they are up to turn some ears useless, or torn them into pieces. But as well, some creativity is presented here; they're not Dolly Metal clones.
The sound quality is raw as a Death Metal band in this way must be, but do not confound it with a fuzzy sound mass. No, here the things are listenable, with a helping hand of Dan Swanö on mastering. And on the cover, to make the feeling of 90's Death Metal, is a masterpiece of Dan Seagrave (the same one who did covers for ENTOMBED's "Left Hand Path", MORBID ANGEL's "Altars of Madness", to name just a few).
But when the album is heard, the pleasure of hearing a so good work comes. Take the abusive heavy, slow and climatic "Tales from the Crematory" (hear the power of the guitar riffs and very good grunts), "Suppurated" (with very clear influence of Swedish Death Metal school on guitars, with the same jigsaw guitar sound), the musically worked "Sultry Obsession" (with some good moments from bass and drums), and the slow funeral dirge called "Ephemeral Paradise". But they have three surprises, three Death Metal versions for PARADISE LOST's "Shattered" (from "Gothic" era), TWISTED SISTER's "The Beast", and ANTHRAX's "Among the Living", all of the three in personalized versions.
Of course you can bet on SUPURATION, and "Reveries..." is a proof of that.<
