Freedom
Spiralarms
There's an old saying within the Metal scene: never trust the name of the musicians. Explain very clearly: you can never take a band member's as a reference, considering his past on other bands. SPIRALARMS, from USA, is a clear example of that, for in the band's line up there are some guys who former members of bands like VICIOUS RUMORS, FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE. But if you all expect some musical violence, forget about it now, for "Freedom", their new album, is no way linked to that.
The sextet does a dirty and psychedelic heavy sound in the vein of the 70s, remembering names as MONSTER MAGNET, old SOUNDGARDEN, C.O.C. (in their more 'sabbathian' phase), and Stoner bands, but catchy, addicting and with good chorus. Nothing new in reality, but it's good, with good vocals, guitar riffs and solos, heavy weight bans and drums, and keyboards doing only the necessary. But need more personality.
In terms of sounding production, we can see a more "oily" and dusty production, trying to sound somewhat "retro-70", but we're on 2013. It's clean, of course, but some fresh air is needed here. Not bad, not dirty, or nothing like that, just out-dated.
Their music is catchy and very charming, of course, and well worked, but some need more personality, a more personal touch of them. Of course we have some great moments as "Dropping Like Flies", the hypnotic "Hold Me to the Sky", the heavy "Blackmoon Rising" (with some good keyboards), the slow "Dealer" (that reminds a lot C.O.C.), and the beautiful "Lovers Leap". The rest is good as well, but as said before: the band needs more personality, for the general feeling that we have after hearing "Freedom" is that the whole album is trying to get the Stoner / Retro music trend.
They can do better than this album; their experience in music tells it clearly, so please guys do it the next time, please...
