Guilty Pleasures
Soren Andersen
Guitar-oriented albums are boring to all those who only listens to music and don't play any musical instruments. Obviously, it's not an absolute truth, because some albums in this format are really fun to hear and to have a good time, as Joe Satriani's "Surfing with the Alien" and some others. But one more album comes to enter this group: "Guilty Pleasures", the album from SOREN ANDERSEN.
For all those who don't know, Soren (that is also a producer) worked with many famous guys as Mike Tramp, Joe Lynn Turner, and actually plays with Glenn "The Voice" Hughes. But this album presents a set of songs the can be labeled as Rock, without any compromise with musical labels or ideals. Soren is virtuous on his six strings attacks, but all flows to make the songs sound unique, and fun to everyone who hears, even those that don't play guitar and don't want to. Yes, it's an excellent work, indeed. Soren produced, mixed, engineered and mastered the album (it's not a surprise due his works on studio), giving it the right amounts of weight, sound clarity and elegance. But there's an 80's feeling that fills the entire album, maybe a fruit from a sound quality that sounds clean, dry, but without creating something mechanical.
All the songs are excellent, showing an eclectic insight to compose them all. But the nasty Rock 'n' Hard "Agent Wells", the groovy and elegant "The Kid", the beautiful and expressive "Satori" (this is a fine example that no one needs to shred a guitar to proof how can be a great guitarist), the uncompromised ambiance of "Skybar", and "1983" can be said the album's best songs. But if one song can define the beauty and the reason to hear this album is "City of Angels", one wonderful piece of musical art in form of Rock 'n' Roll that bring happiness to the heart. Fasten your belts, put the volume at the loudest, and let "Guilty Pleasures" guide you to some great times. And I want this album in an autographed physical copy so bad!!!
