Soilwork - Death Resonance album cover

Some bands grow to a point that every release is expected anxiously by the fans, even when it isn't a new album. But in some cases, these releases are compilations that stand away from "The Best of" format to something that is really important and good. For a unique band as Swedish giants SOILWORK, even a compilation as "Death Resonance" is something really excellent.

This time, the band is offering their fans two fresh songs ("Helsinki" and "Death Resonance"), some bonus that were presented exclusively on Japanese editions from "The Ride Majestic" and "The Panic Broadcast", four tracks from the  EP "Beyond the Infinity", and remixed versions of songs that are exclusively on Japanese version from "The Great Divide" and "Stabbing the Drama". So you will have the clear idea of how the band wants you to have some good material that maybe you don't have (a Japanese CD is really expensive), and not just a set of songs that you already have. You can see how the band evolved since their earlier works until now as well. The sound quality of the compilation is really good, and you don't have any oscillation of the quality. Everything is set with a great care, clear and heavy and the band uses to sound. That essential aggressiveness of their music is here, presented and clear as their music really is. So, musically, what "Death Resonance" could add to SOILWORK's career?

Being extreme, nothing new can be found. It's a compilation, and not a new album of the band. On "Helsinki" (more aggressive and intense) and "Death Resonance" (into a more introspective, but even aggressive, way), you will feel the same power and melodic aggressiveness from earlier works from the band, maybe pointing for a "back to the origins" on the future works (and both presents very good moments from vocals as guitars); "The End Begins Below the Surface" is a bit different from what we all heard on "The Ride Majestic" (it's more aggressive and straight than the songs of the album, even with some melodic moments, with very good work from bass guitar and drums); on "My Nerves, Your Everyday Tool", you can feel excellent melodies on the middle of Death Metal outfit of the band, and the same occur on the excellent "Resisting the Current" (with astonishing vocals, both on aggressive moments as in the clean ones); "Forever Lost in Vain" has some of the modern Metalcore elements that the band is using on their latest works; the good tempos shown on the melodic and introspective "Sweet Demise" is something that the band used to do on the time when they became widely known (in times of "Stabbing the Drama" and "Sworn to a Great Divide"); and the remixed versions for "Overclocked", "Martyr", "Sovereign", "Wherever Thorns May Grow" and "Killed by Ignition" are really tasteful. And we can see them as their best shots, besides the whole CD is fine. SOILWORK is a band that never misses the target, so listen to "Death Resonance" and see what they got.
