Slipknot - We are not your Kind album cover

Many old Metal fans are always complaining about New Metal or modern Metal genres, the most of the believing to be a kind of old school Metalheads (beside the greater part of them never saw the 80's, being born over the decade of the 9'0s). These genres are as precious as any others, because they represent the evolution of Metal, and gather new fans (if you don't like to coexist with them, you can leave the scene at any time). And the name of the North American octet SLIPKNOT is among the greatest in New Metal scene, both for music of polemics, the changes on its line up and the sad news as the death of their former bassist Paul Gray of overdose of morphine on 2010. And they're back for another round with "We Are Not Your Kind", their latest release.

On their sixth album can be found the same musical ways that the band uses since its roots: New Metal (once more, this writer refuses to write on a wrong way to fit in any mold) aggressive, filled with low tunes and chaotic feeling contrasting with melodic parts, and tons of abrasive and savage groove elements. It's insane, nasty and abrasive, as they usually sound, but the same brutal energy and experimental parts, becoming an interesting album even for those that never had any affection for their work. For their fans, just hear it out loud, because the band is making a very good work, as always. The production was done by the band along with their long-time partner Greg Fidelman, with Joe Barresi on the mixing and Bob Ludwig making the mastering. All was done to grant the band that nasty and greasy sonority that is a trademark of their albums, but always being defined in a way that everything can be fully understood both on brutal or clean parts.

But what matters for their fans is: is the music good? Well, the contrasts presented on "Unsainted" (excellent choirs with charming parts, but be prepared for some brutal parts were bass guitar and drums are guiding the rhythm in an insane work, and what a lovely hooking chorus), the mix between an oppressive ambience with experimental electronic noises presented on "Birth of the Cruel", the catchy groove moments and massive weight of "Nero Forte" (the guitar riffs and electronic effects are excellent), the clean vocals parts laid upon a chaotic instrumental basis heard on "Critical Darling", the somber and introspective approach used on "A Liar's Funeral" and on the sinister and experimental "Spiders", and the accessible moments heard on "Not Long for This World" are their best proof that they're really in great shape.

Labeled as their most experimental album, "We Are Not Your Kind" shows that SLIPKNOT still has guts and many more limits to expand with their music. And although many would compare it with "Iowa" and others releases of the band, and the complains about the departure of the former members (it always happens), it's really an excellent album, showing that the band is really alive.
