Slaughterday - Laws of the Occult album cover

Germany is a land with long traditions in Metal, both in melodic styles and in the extreme ones. Names such as SCORPIONS, ACCEPT, SODOM, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, HELLOWEEN, GAMMA RAY, RUNNING WILD, GRAVE DIGGER, MYSTIC CIRCLE, NINNGHIZHIDDA and many others can attest my words, so it's truly difficult to hear a band with a work that could be said only as good. SLAUGHTERDAY is a good band indeed, but they still have a long way to go, because their second album, "Laws of the Occult" is good, but they could be way better. We can say that they play a Death Metal style that is near those bands from the second wave of the style, as DISMEMBER, BENEDICTION, MORBID ANGEL, ENTOMBED and many others that created the way into Death Metal way that we label as European Death Metal. They are good, with a style in the same way of the ancients, but without their musical talent. That's the problem, because you can feel that they are a very good band, but the excessive respect for what was already done isn't letting them go into deeper and deeper unexplored sonorities. It's just more of the same.

The sound quality is truly raw and nasty as the ancient used to sound on their earlier works. Ok, we can understand what they are playing, and their musical work demands a rawer sound with brutal instrumental tunes. But it could be done in another way, in a way that the music could sound in an old way trend, but without being so nasty. But they have talent, and too much. It's what turns the album a good one, because the ideas that we can hear on all tracks are good. But aren't enough for them to be outstanding. You can hear on the guitar riffs of "Ritual of Sacrifice" (that show some good rhythmic changes), the funeral feeling show on "Sepulchral Ways" (where some elaborated instrumental parts appear, with some groove, especially on bass guitar and drums), the slow bitterness that permeates "Torn by the Beast" (even with some fast tempos, where a DISMEMBER scent is too evident), the Hardcore essence of Death Metal on the fast tempos of "Eyes That Never Shut" (even with some funereal moments), and the traditional Death Metal song that is presented on "Forbidden Wisdom." Their version for HALLOW'S EVE old classic, "Plunging to Megadeath," is truly good, but is far behind the original one. SLAUGHTERDAY is a good band, but needs to know how to deal with their musical ideas in a better way.
