Six Feet Under

Yo boy, another album from SIX FEET UNDER. To top it off, it's another album full of covers! There's nothing that I enjoy more than having some of my favorite songs destroyed.
Let's be honest here, the only reason anybody knows and cares about SIX FEET UNDER is because their vocalist used to growl for CANNIBAL CORPSE. Originally OBITUARY guitarist Allen West was the band's guitarist, but he hasn't been in the band for over ten years.
The band itself is competent enough, guitarist STEVE SWANSON even does some nice solos, something that I wish he could do more often on the non-cover albums. The tracklisting is quite surprising; many of these songs aren't the typical choices for covers. We have "Frayed Ends Of Sanity" by METALLICA and "At Dawn They Sleep" by SLAYER, not to mention covers by VAN HALEN, EXCITER and MERCYFUL FATE. I'll give them credit for selecting somewhat "deeper" tracks by well-known bands.
However, anyone that has heard even one SIX FEET UNDER album knows what to expect. As mentioned, the band is competent enough, but Chris Barnes is laughably bad. He has absolutely no range and just growls his way through every song; at times doing this high-pitched rasping thing that brought chuckles to my mouth. He must have the easiest job in the world: go to work, lay down some growls, watch the money roll in. In the end the joke's on us, his band has sold over 500,000 albums and continues to sell well enough to be on Metal Blade Records.
Do I really need to state that this album is a waste of time and money? I want to give this a much lower rating, but I must give credit where it is due. The instrumental performances are mediocre but adequate and the song selection is somewhat surprising. That's really everything positive I can say. If you really want to see this band cover these songs, you know what to expect. It's your money.
