Sepulchre By The Sea - Conqueror Worm album cover

When Black Metal arose back from the depths of underground on the early days of the 90's, two different approaches appeared: one with DARKTHRONE and MAYHEM using a more traditional way, with aggressiveness being the main focus of the music; and the one created by BURZUM, with an ample use of keyboards parts to improve the introspective and melancholic ambience of the band's music (it can be heard clearly on "Det Som Engang Var"). Today, many mix both ways, but keeping the approach of those days, as the UK based band SEPULCHRE BY THE SEA, as can be heard on "Conqueror Worm", the band's first album.

In the due proportions, the band's musicality is based on a form of traditional Black Metal from the 90's, with the drilling aggressiveness of those days, but with many Atmospheric Black Metal parts (where some keyboards touches and clean vocals can be heard). Obviously it's nothing that wasn't heard before in terms of musical genre, but the way the band plays is personal, full of energy and has its charm, indeed. The works during the recording, mixing and mastering were done to make the songs understandable, but keeping the Old School approach (especially on the instrumental tunes) to show what the band has to offer. It's a very good work.

The band uses long songs to express its musical ideas, and their catching somber appeal can be heard clearly on "I Loved Alone" (this one has a strong Atmospheric appeal, reinforced by the good keyboard parts, along with darkened melodies from the guitars), "Conqueror Worm" (this one bears a more traditional appeal, with an abrasive aggressiveness pulsing on it, and with sharp shrieks), "Slices of Death" (a deeper and climatic song, based on a calm and melodic approach), and "Behind the Walls" are the best moments of the album.

SEPULCHRE BY THE SEA seems to have to mature a bit more, but as "Conqueror Worm" shows, the band is on the right path.
