The raw roots from where the sonority of Black Metal was built since the late days in the 70's (VENOM is active since the year of 1979) is on the lack of monetary support for better studio sonorities, and even from the 'do it yourself' ideology (of course one must consider the Punk Rock influences as well). Obviously, as time passed by things improved, but the central ideal of having a set of instrumental tunes that are traditional for the genre is still omnipresent, and some bands still are working with a crude form of sonority, in a more traditional trench on the genre. And it's usual to see such aspect on the German Black Metal scene, and SCHRAT is a fine example of this aspect, as can be heard on "Seelenfresser", their latest release.
The band's music is a form of traditional Black Metal that sounds crude, aggressive and harsh as Hell itself. The way they play is similar to that one established on the early days of the SWOBM, circa 1992-1993, or in other words, a storm of furious accords with a simple technical approach. But even being in this way, far from creating something new for the genre, they show talent and potential, because it's not a carbon copy of what's some band did before. No, they use the clichés of the genre to build something personal and full of a darkened energy. Once more, the band brought Gerileme to work with them on the studio, making the recording and mixing of "Seelenfresser". As the words above states clearly, the band uses a crude and traditional approach on the sonority of the album, but in a form that the rawness isn't deprived of a sense that the fans must understand what's being played.
For a Black Metal fan of the old days, songs as "Parasiteninvasion" and "Terrorkabinett - Gaias Wort" (sets of very simple and aggressive guitar riffs can be heard on both songs, creating the sensation of a 'gelid snowstorm' feeling the songs on its fast tempos), "Kadavertotem" (even with such fast and aggressive insight, some morbid melodic arrangements can be heard, and the high-tuned shrieks are a trademark of German Black Metal), "Chaosbomber - Kenaz" (a song with a more 80's Black/Thrash Metal approach on the tempos, and due some rhythmic shifts, the bass guitar and drums parts are really very good), "Blutmondritus" (on this one, the band uses a slower sets of rhythms, improving the funereal sensation, and with very good guitars once more), and "Dornenhagel - Gaias Folter" (some traces of the melancholic elements from Viking Black Metal can be found, with good 'csiharian' moments on the vocals) are the ones for having a deeper experience on the band's music.
It's clear that "Seelenfresser" isn't a classic for the genre or the 80th wonder of Black Metal. But it shows that the old spirit of the genre is still alive on SCHRAT's music.
