The Dragon, His Angels and the Exaltation of Death
Schemer Heer
People always ask how one can see beauty in Black Metal genres. It's not a hard thing to do when you're into the genre and know how it evolved from a one dimensional form of music in the 80's to a vast universe of musical possibilities from the early days of the 90's onward. And SCHEMER HEER seems to inherit such spirit on the music presented on "The Dragon, His Angels and the Exaltation of Death".
It's a bombastic form of Symphonic Black Metal done by someone that seems to be linked to GNAW THEIR TONGUES. Obviously that it's weird, sometimes reminding experimental approaches used during the second half of the 90's, and the music seems to be a form of Black Metal opera, sinister and funereal. But of course such approach can be assimilated by many, including those fans that rest under the past glories of the genre.
The main sin of this record: the sound quality. For such approach, a better resolution on the sonority would be welcome, because the comprehension of what is being musically expressed becomes truly hard in many moments. Something that could bind the crude approach used with a clean aesthetics could be a fine choice, something near of what is heard on the original version of "Stormblåst".
Some morbid and somber moments of the album will have an appeal on the fans that can overcome the veil that the different is being shrouded. So to assimilate songs as "Our Tumultuous Journey Over the Frozen Mountain Pass", "The Dragon, His Angels and the Exaltation of Death", "The Glorious Rise of the Unnameable Ones", and "The Immortal Herald of Ancient Death" is hard due the sound quality, because it really turns things difficult for the ears (the listeners will hear the keyboards, but if there vocals or guitars on this album, they're hidden).
On the next release, let's hope that SCHEMER HEER can come with something shaped by a better sonority. For now, "The Dragon, His Angels and the Exaltation of Death" is a set of good musical ideas lost in the middle of chaos.
