Satanize - Baphomet Altar Worship album cover

The musical conceptions of some Metal bands preserves can be, at the same time, a strong point for their work or an Achilles' heel. It's important to know what you'll do in music, but you must do it on your way, not trying to be someone that already exists (or existed). It can put everything a band does in danger sometimes, and the Portugal duet SATANIZE is playing with fire in a dangerous way on "Baphomet Altar Worship", their new release.

They use the same Black/Death Metal outfit used by names as BLASPHEMY and BEHERIT on its early days (and that has deep roots on Brazilian band SARCÓFAGO's works). There's no problem on doing such raw and harsh form of music, but besides the music is good, there are moments when they get too near on their influences. It's aggressive and brutal, unleashing a raw energy due the clear Hardcore touches (that are a classical feature of such musical genre), but they need to leave the shadow of their musical influences. The core of their problem resides on the sound quality, because to be harsh and crude doesn't mean to become near of something that barely can be understood. Filthy doesn't mean to be putrid, organic doesn't mean to sound fuzzy.

Their musical work is good, and many good ideas can be heard on songs as "Baphomet Altar Worship" (nasty guitars with Hardcore/Punk Rock touches), "Council of Nuclear Holocaust" (another fast song with a simple technical work), "Conjuration of Southern Elitism" (where speed slows a bit and the Death Metal/Hardcore catchy energy is evident), "Merciless Profanation" and "Cavernous Onslaught", but the songs are so similar sometimes that seems the same song playing again and again. It's not bad or a waste of time, but could be done in a better way.

SATANIZE has musical potential to do something outstanding, and they're veterans. Let's hope that "Baphomet Altar Worship" is that famous 'weak album' that all bands have.
