Asunder
Samskaras
Creative power seems to be a factor in Canadian Metal bands. Of course some bands are not as good as they seem, but the greater part presents special musical works. Since RUSH with their Progressive Metal/Rock, passing by the heavy weight of ANVIL and EXCITER, the brutal Speed Metal grasp from PILEDRIVER (now called THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER) and the experimental insight of VOIVOD, the frozen lands of the country always brought good surprises. Now, one more of these very good surprises come to us: the destructive duo called SAMSKARAS, and they will rip your ears apart with "Asunder".
Here, you'll hear an experimental form of extreme Metal, with Death and Black Metal influences contrasting with some introspective melodic moments. But although this description could not turn clear the true personality of their music, they are doing something different and brutal, and it's very good, indeed. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Christian Donaldson and Marc-Olivier Fréchette at The Grid studio, "Asunder" sound quality is made of contrasts as well: it's aggressive and heavy when the band sounds brutal and oppressive, but extremely clear when they play into a more clean and experimental way. The artwork created by Cate Francis is simple, but very good.
The efforts of Eric Burnet and Alexandre Dupras result in a very good form of music, that the extreme Metal fans will love. In the middle of the technical and brutal "Fuelscape", you'll hear fine clean moments with amazing clean vocals. The fine melodic lines used on "Solar" will remind you all from the beginning of Technical Death Metal, showing great guitars and grunts, as "Separate" bears the same musical features (besides the tempos are slower than before). "Conqueror" presents a more traditional Death Metal outfit, even bearing a very good technique on bass guitar and drums.
So, these Canadian madmen made "Asunder" a very good EP, but it seems that an album is coming soon, and I just can't wait!
