There are many bands playing old Metal genres today. The answer for this phenomenon can be simple and explained by a personal example: personally, I love "Altars of Madness" and "Blessed are the Sick", the first albums of MORBID ANGEL, but "Covenant" sounded to me as something the band had on those early days was lost (again, it's a personal opinion, not a 'ad hoc' hypothesis condemning the quartet's third album, please). Maybe it's a good answer for many band using Old School Metal forms, and it can explain the trend shown by the North American quartet SACRILEGION shown on "From Which Nightmares Crawl". The band provides a form of Old School Death Metal based on inspirations taken from acts as BENEDICTION, SENTENCED (on its early Death Metal age), AT THE GATES (on its beginning), BOLT THROWER and others titans of Europe in the early days of the 90's, but some Blackened Death Metal traces similar to DISSECTION appears in some moments (pay attention to some guitars on "A Terrible Pilgrimage to Seek the Nighted Throne"), when Second Wave of Death Metal took the world by assault.
But no one can deny that there's an intelligence working behind the songs, because the arrangements have some refinement (even besides such level of crudeness and brutality). It's the old formula, but used in a very good way, indeed. Andy Patterson worked on the drums; Mike Jenks did the same on the vocals; and Geronimo Santa Cruz as well on the guitars and bass guitar. And Damian Herring signs the mixing and the mastering. All the efforts were done to keep things in a classic Death Metal format, with the usual brutal and crude appeal of the genre, but with some improvements done by the modern technologies of the recordings.
A first album as "From Which Nightmares Crawl" shows the musical potential of the band explicitly, and besides some shards can be sharped in the future, songs as "A Terrible Pilgrimage to Seek the Nighted Throne" (a brutal and oppressive song, filled with fine classic Death Metal rhythmic shifts created by bass guitar and drums), "Tainting the Sky with Red" (some vibe and arrangements from the guitars reminds the early days of Swedish Melodic Death Metal School, with good technical approach and refined passages), "From Which Nightmares Crawl" (a song filled with shifts between faster moments and oppressive slow parts, and with the grunts of the vocals filling the right spaces), "Legacy of the Impaler" (some fast contrasts reminds the Death Metal age of NAPALM DEATH on the rhythms, and some guitar duets brings the early works of PARADISE LOST to the minds of the fans), "The Hollow Blue Eyes of Yomi at Twilight" (the catchy use of bitter slow parts is always a very good choice, and in the hands of the quartet, things work nicely, indeed), and "Creaking Shadows (That Which Dwell in Silence)" are attest their musical talent, indeed.
It's obvious that SACRILEGION isn't reinventing the wheel in Death Metal, because this appeal exists since the 90's. But no one can deny that "From Which Nightmares Crawl" shows a very good work that will be a favorite album for many Death Metal fans.
