Sometimes, the repetition of hearing too much a Metal style can be dangerous. You can become full of it, because inside every person in this world there's the need to have new experiences; this is why we can't reach a point of total satisfaction. And this is the reason that a Metal fan radical and that hear only one style, in the greater part of the total cases, leaves Metal after sometime. And personally, "Big Daddy" here is somewhat full of hearing Stoner Metal, but it doesn't means that I can't write a good review for Norwegian band RONGEUR, from Oslo. Their album "The Catastrophist & As The Blind Strive" can be described as a very good experience for our ears.

To be more precise, this power trio is very different from the greater part of Stoner Metal bands that we know, due some musical influences that enriches their songs. Some broken tempos, the use of vocals differently, with some shrieked voices and even grunts sometimes. And even keeping their melodic insight, these elements fit perfectly in their work. But the riffs are powerful as well, keeping the aggressiveness and the melodies at the same time, being solid and filling the songs. And the rhythmic session has a very powerful and heavy notion of how bass and drums must play, but with a very good level of technique as well.

The sound quality is the usual for the greater part of Stoner Metal/Rock bands: nasty and raw, but with clearness enough for us to understand what each musical instrument is playing.

Having songs that have duration reaching the mean value of four minutes, they know what they're doing and what they want to get from their work. Songs like the harsh and technical "Traitors" (full of tender melodies on guitars, but the contrasts between harsh and more clean voices is very good), the bulldozer of weight called "Why Would You?" (a more straight song, with bear vocals once more, and a more aggressive insight on the guitar riffs), and the abrasive "Le Rocher Aux Singes" can be named as their
finest moments on the album.

On the latest information about this album, it seems to be a compilation of their two demo CDs, so it would be a good explanation for the rough quality, but does not turn their work less interesting.

A fine work, indeed.
