Suffering with a Smile
Rohan

People can be confused by the difference between Metal Schools ways sometimes, but’s a matter of remembering: every scene has its own ways. In Death Metal, there are many differences between the schools of USA, Sweden, Finland, Germany and others (and even internally such differences can happen as well), so to make comparisons between them is a gross mistake. This can explain to many why the work shown on “Suffering with a Smile” - the first full-length of the Danish act ROHAN - can be different. Nikos Palivos did the mixing and mastering of the songs, creating an oppressive and nasty sonority that allows the hearers to understand what’s being musically expressed by the band, but the instrumental tunes could be better. T
he artwork of Thomas Berg depicts visually many differences between the band’s music and others bands of the same genre. In reality, ROHAN is a one man band, solely based on the ideas and playing of Thomas Berg (former member of ECITON, JEEL, ANXIETY NEUROSIS, JANTEFAX and SATAN ASSAULT), what explains the musical differences, because even being aggressive, there’s something of melodic appearing for trained ears, combining elements of Old School Death Metal tendencies with modern Death Metal traits. And elements from Black Metal and Thrash Metal can be heard on the mix as well. But pay attention: the band’s music is filled with energy and can conquer the fans easily.
It's obvious that for a first coming, “Suffering with a Smile” is a very good release, but more can be expected of the band’s efforts in the future. For now, “Waste of Life”, “Fallacy”, “Despised”, “Individual Sanity”, “Suffering with a Smile”, “Global War”, “Demonized”, “Sacrificed the Lies”, “Never Came Back”, “Dominate the Weak” and “No More Hunger” are pieces of Death Metal that are full of energy, a sobber technical appeal, and a brutal appeal and it’s hard to resist to their extreme hooks. For now, to enjoy what is offered on “Suffering with a Smile” isn’t a sin, but more can be expected of ROHAN’s music in the future.
