Abyss of Excruciating Vexes
Paroxsihzem
Dear nephews and nieces, there are some releases (albums, EPs, Singles) that really make my stomach turn in extreme disgust. That's because I don't understand how some bands can do something extremely nasty and truly raw, without any sense of current musical aesthetics. That's how the Canadian trio PAROXSIHZEM makes me feel when I heard their new EP, "Abyss of Excrucianting Vexes." They play a dirty and nasty form of Death/Black Metal, reminding me a lot what older bands as BLASPHEMY, BEHERIT and MYSTIFIER did in the past. But it doesn't make any sense doing things in such way nowadays, because you can do something with a better sound quality and get outstanding results, even in this brutal way. Sorry, but it sounds kind of artificial for my ears, something that is coming from a model that the musicians are following, and not from their hearts.
The sound quality is as bitter and raw as it could be. But why in the blazes a band needs to do such thing in these times we are living? There's no sense, and you can be extreme and aggressive with a better sound quality. What was done back in the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s was due the absence of money and good equipment. Sounding like this seems to be a band that is following what other bands did before, and that can't do a thing outside from the limits. The five songs of the EP could be better with a good sound quality, but everything turns into a chaotic sound mass. If the intention was to be extreme, the trio got it, indeed. But it was to show some form of good extreme music, they failed greatly!
They show good rhythmic variations and good guitars (as you can hear on "Dillanties Torture"), a handful good musical ideas in terms of Death/Black Metal (I believe that the funereal slow tempos on "BZ Experiment" can be a proof of my words, before the extreme velocity takes over and rip the good ideas apart), and the good imprints of guitars that can be heard on "Isolation". But these extreme low grunts, this recording quality, this need to be as extreme as they can turn all their musical efforts into a failure. With better vocals (try to sound not so low on next time), and a better sound quality, they can become a very good band. But for now, I really don't want to hear this EP anymore.
