蘇醒 - II – Frailty

The album defies traditional categorization and seamlessly blends disparate elements into a cohesive and surprisingly harmonious whole, reminding us that creativity knows no boundaries and that beauty can emerge from the most unexpected combinations.

The Chinese progressive metal band OU (pronunciation: “O” is set to unleash their mesmerizing sound in their upcoming sophomore album, “II: Frailty.” It delves into the ephemeral nature of life, capturing moments as fleeting as a withered leaf born from the river of time. Produced and mixed by Devin Townsend, who is also featured in their hypnotic song “Purge”, OU's “II: Frailty” promises to be a sonic masterpiece that prepares you for a transformative experience as OU navigates the depths of progressive metal, offering a unique perspective on the fragility and beauty of our existence.

“蘇醒 Frailty” is the first song. The music is heavy and complex, while the vocals are ethereal and even coy at times, and this is exactly the sounds that created the fabric of this band’s music. The sounds shifts along the way, sounding like a spider weaving a web, and as it nears completion, the darkness of the photo is revealed in the closing sound. 淨化 Purge” features the vocal talents of Devin Townsend, and is really unlike any song that I have heard this year. A weighted electronic structure with guitars carries heavy Djent accents while the vocals remain in the background. They come out after the half-way mark with harmonies, and Devin’s screams mix in with additional seasoning.

“海 Ocean” is more ambient and pleasing out of the gates, with bright vocals and dancing guitar and bass riffs. Eventually the heavy riff accents sneak in, while the vocals reach ceiling heights, followed by keys. 血液 Redemption” is even sweeter, with a soft and even keel throughout, and the vocals are frail at times, seeming to disappear in the breeze, but they strike with warmth and comfort. Keeping the good times rolling is the funky and smooth sounds of 衍生 Capture and Elongate (Serenity).” The guitars creep up at times and there are even some electronic elements. 破魂 Spirit Broken” begins with a punishing riff and high pitched vocals that shift back and forth like a passing storm. At times, the sounds is very pleasing, while during other times, it is edgy.

“歪歪地愛 yyds” has a less circuitous sound at first with a palate of melodies that you can hold, but it segues into a darker, choppier and heavier sound. The two sounds battle from there as if they were mortal enemies, with one absorbing the other.輪迴 Reborn” is a tale of cleansing, as the title suggests. It is more linear, and has a sweetness that lingers. Recall” closes the album. It has an oddly pleasing sound, from what sounds like wooden drums and a vocal pattern that repeats throughout the song. Overall, the album defies traditional categorization and seamlessly blends disparate elements into a cohesive and surprisingly harmonious whole, reminding us that creativity knows no boundaries and that beauty can emerge from the most unexpected combinations.
