Burning in Heaven
Old Spirit
Some bands are known for its unusual approach in Metal, sometimes being weird for all those who lay their trust on labels. But the unexpected is always something that can be ahead, and no one is free of dealing with it. It's the unusual that brings life to the genre, so accept this fact and enjoy it (or not). And maybe the experimental approach used by OLD SPIRIT on "Burning in Heaven" can bring people to a sense between new and old forms. The band's music is not usual or simple to be described. It's a recollection of influences that goes from Death Metal and Thrash Metal on their Old School forms with Doom Metal and Heavy Metal traits as well, some synths parts that brings the experimental unusual elements into the mix. It's not hard to check that MERCYFUL FATE lifts its fingers in some moments; on others CELTIC FROST raises its fist, ahead old days DEATH touches can be heard, but always with some embodiment given by Doom Metal. It's complicated to describe, but's very good to be heard, full of life and identity.
Recorded, produced and mixed by Jason Hartman himself (the sole member of the band), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, the sonority brings a raw approach on the music, but always trying to be understandable to the fans. But one can understand what's being expressed without problems. Of course, "Burning in Heaven" takes time to be heard and understood, but's nothing so hard and the words could mean. And for a first time on it, hear to "Burning in Heaven" (one can say that it's when MERCYFUL FATE and CELTIC FROST influences meet, with some experimental synths parts, creating a different set of ambiences to the song), "Dim Aura" (this one shows a clear Old School Death Metal tendency, but with many experimental elements tempering the guitar riffs' aggressiveness), "Fallacy" (a set of horror-like synth parts fits on the contrasts between aggressive parts and Doom Metal-like tempos), "Angel Blood" (again a meeting between Heavy Metal of the 80's with some Thrash/Black Metal elements, but with unexpected clean vocals), and "In Dismay", for they're the right ones. On the second time on the album, you'll be hooked.
"Burning in Heaven" is really a good release, but let's wait to see that OLD SPIRIT can use its full musical potential (and a better sonority) on the next album.
