Echoes of War
Nashorn
To play Doom Death Metal is something that demands great effort and creative power from the bands that follow in this path. It's because some ancients created perfect works on the past that now are references, as PARADISE LOST and MY DYING BRIDE, so it's not as easy as it could seem. But there are some bands that have guts, and NASHORN, from Finland, is a quintet with the needed courage to do it. Listen to their EP "Echoes of War" and you'll understand what Big Daddy here wants to say. It's not really a Doom Death Metal band, but a Death Metal band with a great influence from Doom Metal. No, it's not the same thing, because this quintet is more aggressive than Doom Death Metal bands, and not as slow as they are. These guys have the guts to do a good work that, although not perfect, is headed in the right direction.
The sound quality is good. Matias Nastolin made the mastering of "Echoes of War," and the sound quality is able to unite the heavy and bitter sound they play with some elements of Doom Metal esthetics. It's really good, but it could be a little less raw. "The Crucial Attack" show some good rhythmic changes and fine guitar riffs, the same elements that the bitter "Towards Sinister" shows (and where some modern Death Metal elements can be heard). On "Birds of Prey", the rhythmic kitchen is doing a pretty fine work, and the riffs are charming (even under such brutal playing) and some melodic solos appear. Some melodic aesthetic is heard on "Catastrophic Kill", where very good slow tempos and technical riffing is heard (along with good grunts), the same good elements that are present on "Horns of Victory" (and the vocals are pretty good). They are a good band, and hope that they can find a producer to help them to fix their flaws and turn them into a great band!
