There are many mutations in every Metal genre you can think of. And sometimes, these changes become the foundations of what the genre will be from some moment into the future. MAYHEM didn't create Black Metal, but the changes done by the band became the seed of what Black Metal came to be on the 90's, and their work can be said as a cornerstone for the genre. And on the veteran band MYRHOLT such mutations can be traced, as can be heard clearly on "Retterting".

The band's name isn't known as it deserves, because this Norwegian one man band was born on 1992. But on the band's songs (because this album seems like a tribute to some of Ole's musical influences due the versions for classics already known by the public), many mutations can be heard, as elements from other musical genres (the version of DEAD CAN DANCE's "The Trial", called "Rettergang" is a proof of these words) in the blend expressed by Ole. But of course, Black Metal fans will love the album. The sound quality is not as harsh or crude as some fans of Black Metal prefer, but it bears the organic and nasty tunes of the past. So it can be understood by the listeners, but with that raw and nasty approach of the past.

"Til Hinnoms Dal" shows an Old School appeal, sounding morbid and with that funereal appeal of the past on its harmonies (especially on the guitars); the instrumental and acoustic "Hamingja" has an appeal similar to songs that SATYRICON recorded on their Black Metal age (and a different insight that's not usual to Black Metal bands), with the same appearing on "Antydninger fra Kosmos". But "Rettergang" (that is the song "The Trial" from DEAD CAN DANCE cover), "Drep og Drep Igjen" (of course that the fans will recognize "Kill Again", from SLAYER cover), and "Tegn fra Universet" (the hymn "Symptom of the Universe", from Metal fathers of BLACK SABBATH cover) shows many unusual elements for the original versions and even for Black Metal bands, but are very good, indeed.

Maybe MYRHOLT's name isn't known as well as the band deserves, and a listen to "Retterting" will prove that Norwegian Black Metal still has good things to offer.
