Alternātum
Monsterworks
There are bands that play a style of Metal that is extremely experimental and with a wide range of musical influences. To make their musical work into something coherent, in these specific cases, can be a very hard to do. To some, the burden can be unbearable (even with the band thinking that it is), but to others, to live in such situation is normal. They can take the best of their music in such way, as the New Zealand quartet MONSTERWORKS. They know what they want and what they'll do with their music, as we can hear on "Alternātum".
It's a fusion of many different musical influences, with aggressive parts from Thrash and Death Metal, but the aesthetics from Traditional Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock, and with some Stoner/Groove influences in many parts. To say that they can sound brutal or melodic and introspective will not define all that their musical work is. It's an experience that only the ears can say. But undoubtedly, it's very, very good, indeed. Jono Blade (the band's guitarist/vocalist) mixed the album, and Dan Swanö putted his hands on the mastering. The sound quality is raw and oppressive, but with a good level of clarity. It's not the best for their work, but it is good enough.
Their six songs are very good pieces of a consistent and heavy music. Their musical amplitude can be checked on "A New Branch of Physics" (where aggressive parts and vocals contrasts with Progressive elements and very good melodies), the melodies of the introspective "The Oracle" (where some filth aggressive parts of the guitars can be heard, but pay attention to the clean voices), the short and brutal "Living Doomsday" (a Death/Thrash Metal song with some Hardcore and Stoner Rock influences), the powerful Doom Death Metal elements on "Arms Race", the abrasive and Pop moments of "Divergence" (yes, this contrast really exists on their work), and the mixture of aggressive parts and very good melodic lines of "Human Denouement" are proofs that their musical work deserves to be heard and understood.
They are a very good band, and I hope that many can hear and understand what these guys are up to.
