Maestro - Askese album cover

Instrumental works are really difficult for the greater part of the fans that aren't musicians.

This statement is due the hardship to understand a band's work - a vocalist is not present, so the all the things becomes ethereal, abstract, and there's nothing for the fan to hook himself to start. And when things are experimental, the troubles are doubled. Musical technique is not as important as the feeling (RAMONES and AC/DC are proofs of what I mean), and to be honest, German band MAESTRO is doing something really hard to be swallowed on their new work, the alum "Askese".

Their music is done not in an extremely technical way as some could think of, but their instrumental Progressive Rock/Metal is very good, with some harsh and aggressive moments. But I have to say that their musical work is not so easy to comprehend. Due the instrumental work, it becomes really difficult, because they have a diversity of musical arrangements that isn't very easy to be understood at first hearings. Good, but so complex to a broader part of Metal public.

The sound quality of "Askese" is very good, being clear in the way they need. But on the more aggressive moments, that essential dirtiness is presented. Obviously, some instruments' tunes could be better (as on guitars, for example), but is nothing that really can cause troubles to the final result.

"Vision" and its technical work done with good distorted guitars, the technical approach heard on "Perfect Risk", the tender and melodic atmosphere presented on "Rain" and "Silence" (both with very good clean guitars), and the nasty "Storm" can be named as their best moments. But to be honest, on "Askese", a song that lasts more than 23 minutes, you can really hear and comprehend what they have to offer, musically speaking.

The more you hear, the more you'll like it.
