Lykantropi
Lykantropi
One of the most disgusting things of the trends to deal with are endless releases repeating others did. Imagine such a scenario with bands trying to do what was done years ago, especially in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Of course that some good releases comes in the middle of the flood, but being 60-70% of all is a loss of efforts (from the bands) and of time (for the listeners). And the Swedish band LYKANTROPI is one of those that can be ignore, as their album "Lykantropi" shows.
It's just another band trying to bring back what the sands of time entombed a long time ago: the crude and melodic Rock from the 70's, with all the lysergic feeling and Blues/Folk influences that they could gather. It's nothing that anyone didn't heard before on the albums from the 70's, and the band MUST evolve more to become something that could deserve appreciation from the fans. In few words: it's just a copy of what was done, but with some little traces of personality.
On the sound quality of the album, the band uses the modern recording technologies to make "Lykantropi" have a fresh ambience. The only point that things turn into the past is the instrumental tunes and effects use on the instruments, because they are organic and raw as in the past, what's not a sin. In this point, all went in a very good shape.
The problem rests exactly where the band must be good: on the songs. All of them are just recollections of what was done (and heard) countless times in the past. Of course that songs as "Black Old Store" (that presents weight in some parts), "Mary Jane" (good melodies), "Light Night", "Blue Eyes", and "Summernights" (that seems to be a bonus, because the album was released originally on 2017, and this is a reissue) shows traces of talent, but they're succumb before the 'we-must-be-a-70's-band-at-any-cost' that permeates the album. And it's a sad reality, unfortunately.
To LYKANTROPI: put more of you on the next recording, turn off the old vinyl player (and stop to hear old album as well), and try to create on your own craft. For now, "Lykantropi" is just another album in the middle of the flood.
