The Mists Of Time MMXIV
Lucifer's Hammer
And let's hail the ancients again!
Few nowadays know the name of LUCIFER'S HAMMER, an ancient band from USA. For some, the re-release of "The Mist of Time" could sound a bit dusty and moldy, but they're out of action by now, and their music had a strong and bold feeling back on the 90's, where a more atmospheric and morbid music had a strong grasp on the extreme Metal fans.
The quartet is really impressive, for their work runs always from North American Black Metal from the 90's, in a more Black Metal vein than from Thrash/Black Metal often used. Not as brutal as MARDUK, not as somber as MAYHEM, but has a great value, having great harsh vocals, excellent riffs (and some sickening solos), strong and heavy rhythmic kitchen. It's a feast for those who miss that old feeling from that epoch.
Recorded as an independent album, the production is good, but could be far way better than we hear, but again you Old Daddy here says: have in mind that this is an old album, recorded on pre-ProTools or any computational help era. So it's very good for than, and you'll hear all musical instruments and arrangements with no problem, so it's fine. But the cover is new and the album got some good surprises, so be prepared!
Nothing's left to say about them: their album is pretty good, having some excellent moments as the fast and brutal "Woodland Realm", the morbid and somber "Sad Spirits Midst" (this slow tempos are really great), "Celestial Vision" and it's more Gothic touches on vocals, their version for BATHORY's "Enter the Eternal Fire" (I really love this song, and their version is very good, specially due guitars). And as bonus, four tracks from 1992's "The Burning Church" Demo Tape, "The Entrance to Gehenna", "The Burning Church", "Eternally Doomed" and "Mourning Creation's Ruin", all fine tracks, with a raw sounding, but obviously are fine songs.
Thanks to Distro Records for this release (this album really deserved to be accessible to Metal fans once more), and as nowadays there's the trend of coming backs, hey, guys, how about coming out of the grave and hammering the nails one more?
