De Verste Verte Is Hier

Since early days of SWOBM, a more atmospheric and oppressive way of playing Black Metal arose as well, having BURZUM as greater pioneer of this way of mixing aggressive sound of Black Metal with darkened and oppressive atmospheres, leaving aside the characteristic speed of the style to bring into the arena a melancholic approach. We can see some aspects it on "Burzum" and "Det Som Engang Var", and more explicitly on "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss". So from this moment on, the style gained more and more adepts. And from Netherlands, come LASTER, one descendant from these eras and following the style with their first album, "De Verste Verte Is Hier".
Their efforts in creating a depressive and darkened music are fine, with some very good arrangements, bringing good results without being something really new. It's a very good band, but the result is seriously damaged by the recording quality.
Yes, it's as harsh as we can hear on "Filosofem", but it harmed a lot the final result. Of course we can fell that the long songs of the band are pretty good, but of course you can reach better results in this musical approach of Black Metal, but not as filthy and harsh as it is in this album.
All the four songs are very good to the point your Ol' Big Daddy could hear, specially "Tot de Tocht Ons Verlicht" and "Ik - Mijn Masker", both of them with great musical arrangements, along with very good guitar riffs and good technical level. But as said above, this quality really turns a detailed hearing a very hard trial, due the need to understanding deeper what they are playing and what they want to get of their songs.
Personally, Big Daddy here prefers to assume that they had no conditions to do a better work on studio, so hope the next time they can come with a better sound quality. We can feel that they are pretty good, no doubt, but be clearer to our ears.
