Krullur - Grounds For Termination album cover

When Old Big Daddy started to hear this EP, the clear idea was "oh, no! Not another clone from the 80's!", but reading the band's story, the things turned out clear, and I had to pay some respect: North American trio from Huston (Texas) KRULLUR is not a bunch of kids hypnotized by dusty old Metal albums, but is an old and savage warhorse coming from the 80's (their foundation is on 1989! A 25 years of life serving Metal!), and they put their spirits on "Grounds for Termination".

Mixing some earlier Death Metal influences (from the forefathers, like DEATH, MASTER and POSSESSED) with the lashing energy from a more aggressive way of playing Thrash Metal (maybe SLAYER from "Show No Mercy" and "Hell Awaits" era would fit as a musical influence of them), and some Hardcore touches, their music is nothing new, but the question is: do they really need to show something new, being a diehard band this way? I can affirm that don't.

Aggressive vocals (harsh tunes in a normal voice), intense guitar riffs and distorted solos (here a influence from earlier German Death/Black/Thrash Metal arise, like VENOM, old SODOM and something from CELTIC FROST), drums with some technique and bass giving support for the rhythmic mass. Nothing new, but good and done by those who know what Old School Metal means with their lives.

The sound quality is not as good as it could be (and possibly would made them reach a better result), but it's not as bad as some works I heard since some months. But it's not as dusty as some newcomers like to make. It's good.

Pulsing with life and energy, these six songs are a testimony of a generation of bands and fans, so be prepared to hear songs as "Bringer of Destruction" (very good song, with some very good riffs), the charming "Necromancer of Death" (these not so fast tempos are too hooking! I had to bang my head again and again with this vocals and riffs!), the purely aggressive and lethal "Designed for Failure" (with some very good tempo changes), and the excellent "No Hold Barred" and "Infestation" (both with a not so fast way of playing, giving more insights on heavy and thunderous weight).

Of course some nephews and nieces would ask "but just because they're and old band, do they deserve a better result?", and Big Daddy must be extremely clear: Yes, because there's a big difference of an 80 guy playing this kind of music, and a newcomer guided by some old Metal preachers that exist. Newcomers just play the instruments with their hands, and guys like KRULLUR play with their hearts and souls.

Just that...
