Pylon
Killing Joke
Well, I need to write a lot this time...
At the end of the 70s, back in the UK, many bands that weren't linked in any way to Metal scene arose from the depths of the underground scene and became great successes in the first half of the 80s, as THE SMITHS, THE CURE, THE SISTERS OF MERCY and others. But there were many that, besides recognized by a great number of fans, never get a broader success. And one of the finest names of this Rock scene is from English quartet KILLING JOKE. And for those who don't know, pay attention: METALLICA made a version for "The Wait", and bands as SOUNDGARDEN and FAITH NO MORE members are among their fans, so pay some respect to this legendary quartet that made many works on styles as Post-Punk, Industrial Rock, Gothic Rock and even New Wave. And if you don't know, doesn't matter: take a listening to their new album, "Pylow", and see what they got.
Their style can remind you a lot from something you all heard somewhere, but be calm: maybe what you heard it's an invention from the quartet, to see their creative and musical power. Mixing Post-Punk, Pop Rock, and even some elements from earlier Industrial Rock, "Pylow" can be as a record where the band recovers a lot from their more musical accessible side, but with some elegant touches. And to hear again these enigmatic and tender tunes on vocals, these noisy and catching guitar riffs, this strong and powerful rhythmic session, it's a pleasure for the soul. An excellent sound quality is presented on the entire album, but the main feature that astonished me a lot is how the sound flows in an organic way, but extremely clear, as some record from the 80s would sound with modern digital technology.
The album has a constant level of quality, being excellent in every song. But I dare to name as their finest songs "Autonomous Zone" (an outrageous and energetic Rock and Roll song with very good tender and enigmatic vocals), the tender and hypnotic "New Cold War" (great vocals and noisy experimental moments, and very good work from bass and drums) and "Euphoria", the experimental Post-Punk "Delete" with its fine accessible and bitter riffs, the hooking "I Am the Virus" (with a more Industrial Rock side, with abrasive guitars and great work from bass and drums once more), and the grand finale given by "Into the Unknown".
I hope there is more to come.
